Best wishes to a real 'Car Guy"
By JOHN CHRISTOFFERSEN
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - Paul Newman, the legendary actor and philanthropist, is battling cancer, his longtime neighbor and business partner said Wednesday. Newman, 83, has recently appeared gaunt in photos, and dropped plans to direct a play in his Connecticut hometown. Writer A.E. Hotchner, who partnered with Newman to start Newman's Own salad dressing company in the 1980s, said the actor told him about the disease about 18 months ago. He did not specify what kind of cancer, but said Newman is in active treatment. In 1982, Hotchner and Newman started a company to market Newman's original oil-and-vinegar dressing. Newman's Own, which began as a joke, grew into a multi-million-dollar business selling popcorn, salad dressing, spaghetti sauce and other foods. All the company's profits are donated to charities. By 2007, the company had donated more than $200 million, according to its Web site. Michael Brockman, Newman's racing team partner, said Newman told him recently that he wants to get back into his race car for a test run and possibly another competition. His last race was last fall, he said. "I think he's doing better than he was," Brockman said, noting that Newman had regained most of the weight he had lost. "I think he looks great," said Brockman, who saw Newman last weekend. "I wish I looked that good." Brockman called Newman "one of the best guys I ever met. He's just a regular guy," Brockman said. "He's humble."

Sorry to hear about the disease. Herr Newman always was one of my favorite gentlemen, actor and driver.

I feel bad about him just getting old, much less sick. He's a great 20th century icon, an original IMO. I particularly like the way that he's been an example of charity combined with having a damn good time living at the same time. I've always thought that the ultimate would be to have so much $$ that I could give most of it away and still have enough left for his lifestyle.
Whatever happens, he's lived an exemplary life and had an impact.

Awesome guy, a neighbor used to race his WV rabbit in races when he was running his Nissan Z car in the early 80's. He was always friendly and nice to everyone there no matter how star struck they were.

I overheard a couple talking at college a few years ago. The guy was saying something about Paul Newman and the girl didn't know who he was. He said, "you know the famous race car driver". I looked over at the guy and smiled that I got it. He smiled back

His circle is certainly far different than mine but would be happy to have him for a neighbor from what I've heard. Far from the more 'modern' Hollywood type.

Best wishes. It was always a treat to go up to the vintage races up at Lime Rock, and watch him go. Despite his age, he always did pretty well for himself.

I used to deliver paint to the shop that did the work on his Z's. Always enjoyed going there. It's a shame he never won Indy as an owner, (or did he?), with the driving talent Newman/Haas had.
And as an actor, second to none.

My coworker is a neighbor and says he is a real gent and has not been doing well. The NY tabloid press has been very gentle in breaking this story..

Why he didn't when an academy award for the original I'll never know. But I suppose the 'made it right' by giving it to him for the remake or what ever it was.

Quote:
I agree...perhaps he was upstaged by others in the cast of "The Hustler"...George C. Scott, Jackie Gleason, and Piper Laurie. He'd never held a stick before shooting the movie. Gleason was a good pool shooter in his own right. Newman quickly picked up the nuances of stroke & aim thanks to "consultant" Willie Mosconi. In "the color of money", Paul Newman had no worries of being upstaged by Tom Cruise. ![]() I'd suggest that "The Hustler" is an outstanding movie, whether the viewer is a pool player or not. Can't say the same for "The color of Money".... It really saddened me to hear that he has lung cancer. Great actor...and his long marriage serves as testimony that he has better values than many of the Hollyweird set.

I'm sure you heard the story why he didn't do that...

Newman is roughly quoted as saying: "Why would I go out looking for hamburger when I have steak at home?"
on the Johnny Carson show... And... Paul Newman is HUD. Excellent movie. Last edited by tcar; 06-12-2008 at 01:15 PM.. |
