Every bit of the "KITT" bodywork can be easily removed to reveal a stock Firebird underneath. Even the dash board pops out with just a couple dozen sheet metal screws. Ask me how I know!

I owned a Firebird at one point in my life. Absolutely horrendous piles of crap.

Looking at the styling of that car, it's all the more fitting it was paired up with David Hasslehoff.

With the exception of the dash board, that car was built in four days by three guys and then it went to CarCoa for the paint work. The studios came up with the dash board.

There is one of those (although not the super-special "pursuit" model) in our town. The guy who owns it works delivering pizzas for Dominos. I've been tempted to take a picture of it with the magnetic sign on top. I'd love to yell "Dave, it looks as if you're slippin' a bit". Rings are worn, nice blue clouds follow it (probably left the "smoke screen" button on).

It's good work given the time and labor constraints.

You would have thought that a top-rated television show would have had the budget for better work though.

It also explains why the camera shots (IIRC) of the car while in "Pursuit Mode" were didn't really allow you to get a good focus on the car.

I love the special "6-into-18" exhaust.

edit: sorry, 8-into-18, apparently.

The production company came to George and asked if he could hammer something out real quick (5days) for a "special, one time scene" they had scripted. It wasn't intended to be seen on a regular basis. The production company owned the car and wasn't under any obligation to return it after the scene so they kept it and used it whenever the script called for it. George wasn't happy about it 'cause he wanted to build a better version ($$$$$).
