Thank you all for the input! Some of the details I left out are that it's a two level stucco house with plaster walls inside, and that these are replacement windows to include the frames around the windows which are of a composite (not vinyl) construction. The quote was from a Pella store. I also appreciate the info. regarding Andersen, and I'll check into that. FWIW I have Home Depot scheduled to give an estimate tomorrow.

Here's a pic I took yesterday of my vinyl/aluminum wrap windows. I like the look, except I need to paint some trim now!

Here, the elec. co. will pay if you put in high efficiency windows. I expect more tax write-offs in the future for that at both state & federal levels. i.e. maybe wait a year.

MRM - would be interested in hearing you comment on vinyl windows. I hate them...

Around here (i.e. near Jeld-Wen) no one at all is willing to buy their products... they have a bad rep. in every way you can think of.

also, I hear there is now window that is fiberglass on the exterior, wood on interior.

Milt,
A few weeks ago, I saw your "job hunt thread." Did you settle into a new line of business?

If not, do you personally install windows?
Love to replace 5 windows + a slider if you are up to it...
Probably with some Andersen Renewals or something at Home depot. My original single pane windows are a real joke... --Luis

My input:
I've got a 2 story brick house with 40 original Andersen casement windows (built in 1938).
These windows have gotten to the point where if the planets aren't aligned just right when trying to open some of them, panes will fracture, and I know that at this time in their life, they are completely inefficient.

The Renewal by Andersen guys came out to give me a quote. It was mandatory that I not lose my gum trim or damage the plaster work. After getting the price for removal, replacement, steel clad any existing exterior wood, and haul-off; I pulled the trigger.

$49,000; down to ~$45,000 with some discounts. The installer will be here today for final measurements to have them built.

What I want to know, is there a market for 40 windows worth of 70 year old Andersen hardware? Cranks, latches, bug screens, etc... should I salvage them?
