Second on the list - several beers and go back to bed, if you don't have to go to work.

Do they have vitamin B shots where you are? I hear they work well.

Too late now for you, but I swear by 2 extra strength advil and a gravol before bed. I get BRUTAL hangovers, so I rarely drink to excess, and when I do, it's usually by accident - couple too many scotches or glasses of wine without paying attention. If I forget, I'm in agony the next morning until at least mid-afternoon - as in, can't get out of bed.

You are a doc... so this shoudl be easy.

My personal experience is re-hydrate (I use gatoraide cut half and half with water), some OTC painkiller (advil is my choice), and when I worked in a hospital, about 10 or so minutes on lots of high flow oxygen....

My brother is an EMT/firefighter, he has the same basic cure, but instead of the gatoraide he's been known to start an iv on himself and put in a liter or two of saline...

either should do, but since I'm a wimp around needles, I prefer the gatoraide method

DING! DING! DING! We have a winner!!! :D

Working in aviation, while in the Corps, any hangover, no matter how severe, was quickly done away with by the three steps listed above. Re-hydrate, Advil and a 10 minute session breathing straight O2.

Worked every time! :D:D:D

From my wife's collection:

Umbrian Hangover Frittata

Ingredients: (for 2)

2 spicy Italian sausages, crumbled
6 eggs
10 anchovy fillets, minced
3 T olive oil
1 onion, chopped
4 garlic cloves, minced
3 T finely chopped parsley
¾ cup cooked vegetables (I prefer edamame beans)
1 cup diced tomatoes and zucchini
1 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese
1 T fresh thyme
salt and pepper to taste

Method:

1. Turn on the broiler.

2. In a pan that will fit in the oven, sautee the sausages in oil, over a medium-high heat until cooked. 3 or 4 minutes before these are done add the anchovies, tomatoes, zucchini, garlic and onion.

3. Meanwhile mix the eggs in a bowl with the remaining ingredients.
Put pan from step one on a low simmer and stir in the egg mixture. Cover and cook covered until the edges shrink a little bit. Remove lid and slip the pan under the broiler until lightly browned. Serve hot.

4. Serve with pitcher of Bloody Marys’.

Prior to sleep, hydrate with water.
after waking up to pee in 4 to 6 hours..hydrate again, go back to bed.
Finally, wake up , hydrate with choice of OTC Pain killer, kielbasa and eggs with tobasco sauce for breakfast.
If you still feel bad, callout of work and go back to bed.

+10,000 on the oxygen

I notice the good doctor is no longer online, I fear he went with the hair of the dog recommendation and ran with it... perhaps we should have warned him that the rest of the day is going to be a write off. ;)

A whole heartedly thank you to every one stepping in with good advice! You are the best.

Turned out a good friend of mine showed up 30 minutes after I started this thread (in agony). He brought with him a couple of six pack and I thought what the hell - I am off duty this weekend.

Nothing like alcohol to beat a hangover. :D

nostatic 06-20-2008 11:58 AM

street tacos.

or heroin. your choice.

widgeon13 06-20-2008 12:00 PM

Bay scallops and a good bloody mary. The bay scallops are small and you can blow them through you nose if you puke, the bloody mary will help settle the stomach and the nerves.

H2O. While I don't drink to excess, I do know this:
the headache associated with a hangover is due to being dehydrated.
Drink lots of water. Then some more. Then a little more.

A hangover is your body telling you that you're a dick.

Is that before or after your wife tells you the same thing???

IV fluid(D5W works best)
O2, by mask, 6-10 l/hour
If you don't feel like starting a line, just drink plenty of fluids with your oxygen.

Even better, take some chaser(activated charcoal) when you go to bed, will wake up feeling like 100 kroner, or euros, or whatever the money they use up there in the Scandiwhovian countries

Mom is a retired anesthesiologist, she kept all sorts of handy stuff around the house, oxygen, IV fluids, start kits, solumedrol, epinephrine, valium for injection. She was pretty much ready for anything that happened and is as cool as the other side of the pillow. I bet you could set her hair on fire while she was starting an IV and she would get it, then calmly put out her hair.
