What do U.S. women feel about a potential first lady who wears an inexpensive, off-the-rack dress to co-host "The View?"

Pretty darn enthusiastic.

After Michelle Obama mentioned on "The View" on Wednesday that she bought her B&W sundress at a store called White House/Black Market, women started pouring into the retail chain's stores, clamoring for the $148 dress designed by Donna Ricco.

"Women literally were snatching (that dress) up," Jessica Wells, a spokeswoman for the White House/Black Market, which has 322 stores across the country, told the Wall Street Journal.

Turns out it may not only be time for a political change, it may also be time for a change of clothes when it comes to first ladies.

"I'd put her in an Oprah sphere in terms of influence," Tom Julian, prez of the Tom Julian Group, a New York City-based brand consultancy, told the WSJ.

Later, speaking to the Dish Rag, Julian predicted that Obama will change the face of political fashion in that she could be the first first lady to wear both high and low-end fashion.

"She will bring affordable American sportswear to the forefront, and this is very appealing to the Middle American woman voter. I can also see her as a Vanessa Williams, Halle Berry, Angela Bassett-style dresser. She's modern –- a boomer, a woman of color with a real shape. It will be interesting what she picks as a signature piece, and I predict that it will be in the sportswear realm."

He also says he would not be surprised to see her embrace some black designers such as Kevan Hall and Tracy Reese, to tell a modern American fashion story during the upcoming election.

Speaking solely for myself, how incredibly refreshing to see an intelligent, articulate woman who shops for herself, doesn't use a stylist and doesn't think a designer name means she's better dressed than someone else. Michelle just likes to look pretty and comfortable. How novel.

I far prefer this woman's fashion sense to that other one, you know, the waifish blond beer heiress who goes with Secret Service agents to Oscar de la Renta's swanky Manhattan showroom to check out his designer wares.

Laura Bush is a stepford wife and Cindy McCain has her own prescription med "history".

No they are ladies...not trailer trash like Bruni...and unlike you or Obama...have always been proud of their country.

Canadia has lottsa English-Canadians to, even some Jewish and German an, oh yeah, even some Italian-Canadians (some are pretty smart - loyers, even!).

I actually think that there is something ugly about CB, maybe it's a hardness to her face or something. Not my favorite model. She is sexy I guess for a first lady, but in a dirty way. I can see why the French like her, though, my taste rarely intersects w/ the French in those matters.

You illustrate my point nicely. In the US a permanently pickled, matronly, frump is considered a respectable first lady, and a hot, talented and intelligent woman is considered a skank because she admits to a sexual history (a modest one, but a history nevertheless).

In France people take delight in their new first lady, and think she reflects well on the taste and virility of their head of state. In the US the only thing that matters in a first lady is that she have no apparent sex life.

As for the tart the President of France married, I have been out with women like that, used their cars, went to parties, had some good sex but no way in the world would I marry someone like that, A man like that in public office and every time he goes to a party he wonders how many guys there banged his wife. Or still are.

Well, well...Carla and Laura simply illustrate how different the french and the americans are. On one side of the pond, you have people who make no big deal of sexual life, and understand the difference between private matters and politics. On the other side, you have prude puritans who would rather impeach a president who got an affair in the white house, than hold another one accountable for screwing up their country, as long as he does not cheat on his boring wife. I think it is pretty funny that anyone would stoop so low as to post a 40 year old' woman's nude photos (from when she was a 19 year old fashion model) and proclaim that she is better than the 61 year old first lady...because she is hotter... There is a reason we call the President's wife the first lady...with the exception of Hillary who went by "co-president."
