Youth Archery question
My daughter has decided she like archery. She's 10. I know nothing about archery.
Any recommendations on a good starter bow that won't break the bank?

My mother still keeps my old Bear bow around for the grandkids to use. My nephew is 8 or 9 and loves it. Similar to this... http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GUZG4Y?
get a dozen or so arrows. chasing them down after shooting only two would suck. fold together a bunch of cardboard and paint a circle. put the dogs and cats in the house. Last edited by einreb; 06-24-2008 at 06:26 PM.. |

That's what I learned archery with when I was that age...imo, you don't need anything fancy at all but you might want to "splurge" on that deluxe shooting glove while you're at it

i had a bear youth compound at 11. another thing my mom shouldnt have purchased for me. i was a disaster. i remember shooting an arrow straight into the atmosphere. when i lost sight of the arrow, i knew i was an idiot. i will call my bro, if i still have that bow in his house, you can have it for free. we had two. he had one also. it may be too burly for you little girl.
fast foward many many years...it is now my hunting tool of choice, and i dont shoot into the air anymore..great hobby.

How much room do you need and how do you set up the range? This looks like a fun summer activity for the boys

youth bows do not require that much. i would look up archery clubs in your area. but if you want to do a backyard deal, straw bales will stop a kiddie bow. 10 yards, a good backstop and a tennis ball hanging from a string = hours of kid entertainment.
if you have a good hillside as protection, you can buy a store target that is maybe 2.5'x2.5' for around $45. kids will miss a target that sized regularly, so a good hillside is key.

We started with a simple recurve from Cabela's and a foam target from the local hunting shop.
I want to say we paid about $100 for the bow. There is a $100 one on here. Its a good starter to see if they will stick with it, then you can spend from there. My son was grouping them together nicely from about 5 yards out and still needing some practice from 10 yards. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/index/index-display.jsp?id=cat600272&navAction=jump&navCount=1&cmCat=MainCatcat21424&parentType=category&parentId=cat21424

I had no idea ot the kind of development archery could spark in young girls. Good luck.

Do they make dummy arrow heads with no point ends?

I'm not sure you would even need a tip on the arrow for a 10 year old shooting into a soft target (i.e. bale of hay, etc.). In fact, that might be a good idea initially if you don't have a good backdrop or area to shoot in.
edited ps: Rubber tips would be even better (after reading Vash's post). |

Our kids started shooting about 9 years I bought them a youth PSE set up decent bow for about $125.00 ?. They enjoy shooting it with me in the evenings, buy a fairly good bow to avoid frustration, keep your shooting lessons short, fatigue comes fast for little arms. It's a great sport that will last a lifetime. We shoot gophers in the pastures after dinner.
