Job ads, are you kidding me?

I found this one just browsing. I wouldn't have the stones.

Will be leading 2nd shift powder coating teams. Will be supervising employees as well as production. The main job duties will be working on the paint line - spraying, loading, unloading and packaging the product. They will also be leading a team of about 6-10 people total. This person will be looking at areas of improvement, productivity and quality (just to name a few.) He/She will also work with management.Must be drug free and take pre-employment test. Candidates must have powder coating and leadership experience. Must have good work history. All experience must be listed on resume to be considered for position.

* Location: Grand Rapids, MI
* Compensation: $10.00

Managing 6-10 people in a mfg. setting for $10/HR?????? I start my part time grunts at $9.50. Unreal.

No, I think the ad reads that the job pays a flat fee of ten bucks for the whole thing. Now you know why so many employers cry that they can't get legal Americans to do their work?

Is the job market in Michigan really that bad?
My company recently lost one of our two forklift operators. They retitled the position from Material Handler to Yard Attendant so they could lower the wage. Now, suprise suprise, they can't seem to keep anyone for more than a month or two.

They're paying $10 an hour at the Chevron by my house, just to run the cash register.

I do bookkeeping work and see the same thing.

They want 5 years experience, expert in all accounting functions, degree in accounting, etc, etc... paying $12/hr. Funny thing is these ads run over and over again - sometimes the rate creeps up, sometimes it doesn't.

I saw a funny one on Craigslist about a year ago. They wanted a lawyer who was licensed in DC to do German document translation and it had to be in the law firm's downtown office.....for $40 per hour. I emailed the lady and said I could easily do that job from home without a law degree, but would like to know where I could hire a lawyer for $40 per hour. No response.

I've been looking for a substantial job in the area and I have come across some ads like the ones you mention (mainly the Toledo area). These companies want you to run the whole place for $10/hour. What you can't design, manufacture, do quality control and shipping by yourself for $10/hour?? Oh and you also need 25+ years experience in the field too.

You get what you pay for.

Not telling you how to run your business, but in general I find if you treat people like professionals and compensate them like professionals, they'll act like professionals. If you treat people like they're worthless, compensate them like they're worthless, they'll be worthless.

Yes, there is a percentage that will "slack", but in general those are my observations. Have you stopped to consider that possibly you're creating a "self-fulfilling prophecy" here?

Just my $0.02. Flame away.

My wifes cousin owns a Oil Change business, he was crying to me he cannot leave the place, he has to close it down if he goes out of town. I suggested a well paid manager that is accountable for the places performance.

He told me he tried that and it did not work out. I come to find out he was paying the guy $9 an hour.

You get what you pay for.

And even if you can get someone to work for below prevailing wage, you run a high risk of employee theft. I've seen it many times. It's especially common in a service business where a bartender, landscaper, car detailer, whatever, can cut a break for a customer and make a larger tip or take on side work and get paid in cash. In fact, I'm having my wife's Mini's windows tinted on Thurs. with a house call. I wouldn't be surprised if the guy would do my 993 too for a steep discount in cash and then not report it to the boss.

I disagree: Pay is not a motivator, they are either going to work or not regardless of the pay, Oh yea, when we pass out the increases there is a slight bump in work for about a week, I myself would not change the way I work based on the pay I get but then I keep my boss on his toes, When I started I told him I will never ask for a raise, you will know when I leave that I am not paid enough, but it does not change the way I work!

I agree and disagree.

Pay is not a motivator I agree. What I mean is that people will not put out more if you pay them more.....it just doesn't work that way.

but..

There is a threshold that quality people will not work for. In other words a fairly intelligent, fairly hardworking guy is intelligent enough to know he can make a lot more than $4.25 an hour and won't even fill out your app. You troll the bottom you catch suckers

Pay is not necessarily a motivator, but you do tend to get what you pay for
