short rant.

I just got a new camera. worked great for a month then battery died. well today i needed to take a pic for a thread. and put new batterys in and it's acting up!
like it will only turn on for 5 secs then die. then the screen started to make lines then, the zoom thing started getting stuck. now it won't even turn on at all.. I'm like WTF 200$ for this piece of schiesse..

it's a Nikon coolpix P50. that i got on sale... and the reciept and box are long gone.... arr it makes me mad..

Does it have a removable memory card. Most will mimic that behavior without the memory card in it. Did you use a Visa or other charge card. Many cards will extend warranty. Many stores will accept your charge card statement as proof of purchase and look up your invoice.

Does it take 2 AA batteries?

Some of those Nikon Cameras will accept 2 AAs in a pinch, but you really need to use a CRV-3 battery, which is the fancy one-piece one that acts like 2AAs but lasts much longer.

I had a Nikon that sucked with CRV-3 batteries in it, but REALLY sucked (and had the same kind of symptoms you describe) with AAs.

That Nikon should have a 1 year manufacturer's warranty.

Did you register it @ Nikon.com? Have a receipt? (edit: sorry, I see that you mentioned you trashed the receipt!)

Sounds like it is behaving as if the batteries are weak or perhaps not making good contact inside.

Well, I had great luck with my first Nikon, but I got my dad one for Xmas and it was not nearly as good. Anyway, it's a shame the camera took a dump on you, but honestly you can only be mad at yourself because you don't have the box and receipt. It's electronics - some have infant mortality.
