Southeast Asia trip- vaccinations necessary?

My significant other/ g/f/wife... whatever you want to call her is going on a trip for two weeks to Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand with a couple of girlfriends while I am stuck at work. They are going on a tour for the first week and then free for the second week. The tour operator recommends Typhoid fever, Hep. ABC shots for their trip. One girl got the shots and got sick from them so one of the other girls decided to skip them.

Does the Pelican braintrust have an opinion on their necessity?

Any suggestions on places they have to see or avoid while there?

My employee and his wife just returned from Vietnam. From what he told me, they had to get vaccinations in order to get their visa...

I would get all the shots. There's a couple more even than the ones you mentioned. Also get shots for the West Nile thing (or whatever it is called). People regularly die from this - it's mosquito borne.

As for places to recommend - well there are too many! Get some good guidebooks.

Dallas must have travel doctors. Many of those practices around.. Big chart on the wall with all the bad stuff all over..

The malaria meds is a whole other thread. I took the once a day as the side effects are less than the once a week therapy.

Plenty of goods sites on line regarding all these topics. It sounds like an adventure.

I also skipped the Malaria shots. I think part of it depends on the type of travel you are doing, if you are visiting the cities, you won't run into mosquitos and have less of a risk of catching something. In fact, even when I have gone off on hikes in SE Asia, I haven't noticed any of the little buggers, certainly nothing like here in Ontario. Still, I think taking the shots is a reasonable precaution, and I didn't suffer any ill effects. I'll be there this summer, and won't be getting any new shots.

There aren't malaria shots. They are PILLS. You need to start them before the trip and continue them after the trip.

Skipping them is malaria roulette. Just not smart. (nothing personal)

It's the number one killer in the world.

Polio booster is a good idea, too.

And, I've not heard of a West Nile vaccine. Didn't think there was anything for it, according to my doc.

I had it a year ago. Little something I brought back from a farm in west Texas.

Sucks - really sick for 6 weeks.

Take everything imaginable and then take them again!!! Any G.I. who ventured over there was vaccinated with pretty much what was on the list you presented and then some. No shots for malaria only quinine pills. Hepititis series is a painful innoculation (gamma-gobulin), but thats the price of traveling to a third world country! Bottled water a must. From what I hear Nam has not changed much besides an explosion in population. Its a very poor country and I recall nothing was wasted, nothing! I was one of many who contracted malaria in country. If it were someone in my family headin over to Nam, I would have them go to the family physician and/or reserach the web and take what ever innoculations are necessary. One really bad bug over there can really ruin your day!!

And only drink CARBONATED BOTTLED WATER.

If it's not, it could have been filled from the hose out back.

For my first trip to China I didn't bother with vaccinations, as it was middle of winter there. Second trip, however, was in summer. I got measles, mumps, rubella (one shot for all three), tetanus and hep. A. For hep. A you need a booster six mos. later.

Oh yes, get the Dengue fever prophylaxis as well.

As someone said, go to a doc in your area who knows something about tropical medicine.

Much better to be smart about these things.

i got all of them since kaiser did it for free. not even a co-pay. the malaria pills scared me. isnt there a crazy side effect, like insanity? (or something)

i figured, DEET, and a mosquito netting was some protection. for the rest, i just kept all of my body parts out of any local's body parts. worked out great.

No.

Some people have 'vivid' dreams, (I did) but that's not a big deal compared to malaria.

No.

Some people have 'vivid' dreams, (I did) but that's not a big deal compared to malaria, which can kill, or stay with you the rest of your life.

When I moved there years ago, we got 12 or 14, I can't remember which. Lot's of follow-up boosters twice a year. It sucked.

Just got back from my honeymoon in Vietnam. Check the CDC web page. We were in Siagon, Hoi An, Da Nang, Hanoi and Halong Bay. No shots necessary just booster update. I was too late for anything and just went. No problems. Was there for 3 weeks.

Now if you go into the jungle, that's a different story.
