To answer some of the questions.

Yes I am posting with the new laptop.

Opening pelican was quick when I had XP.

As an example if I open Rennlist it opens right away.

All internet security is turned off however no there is no difference in operation.

I'm taking the computer to a friend tomorrow who does IT work.

update

I'm replying on my old laptop. The screen is shot so I'm shining a light on the screen to see what I'm doing.

I returned the computer to Best Buy and got a full refund. I went to another location and purchased another new unit.

The same thing is happening.

I contacted HP and the rep talked me through the system.

Bottom line is my modem is screwed. I have to wait 3 days for a new one. To prove it I went to a Starbucks and the wireless internet got me on line.

I was just forced to purchase a Vista notebook. After I uninstalled all the crap that comes with new computers, disabled the vista features, made it look more like XP, and installed firefox it works just like before. In fact you would be hard pressed to find differences. That being said I would have still preferred XP. Oh well.

I've been on the phone off-on since yesterday for around 4 hours to get my e-mail to work. My internet provider has given up saying I should contact Microsoft.
Internet Explorer is a little better. The funny part is some web sites load up right away. Pelican takes 15 minutes to open up. To post this rant took 10 minutes to open the page.
I've gotten some tips from searching and it sped up a bit but this system seems slow.

FWIW I had very similar issues wiht my dv9000 . I found out I was losing my connection periodically between my router and my cable modem. Now this wasn't a vista "problem" per se but the rest of the computers in the house reaquired the IP/connection instantly. VIsta took several minutes.

Switched to a Netgear router, problem gone.

What were you using before? NetGear and Belkin usually get the most complaints.

ZyXel. Chinese Mfg. I couldn't even get the LinkSys model to obtain and IP. They've dummy-fied the setup so much that I was lost.

update #2

I received the new modem today loaded it and all is well.
So far so good. I do have an XP back up just in case.
Thanks again for all the advice that was given.
