Windows Vista

I am living in Vista hell. My Dell Inspirion crapped out yesterday. So I purchased an HP Pavillion dv9000 laptop with Windows Vista
I've been on the phone off-on since yesterday for around 4 hours to get my e-mail to work. My internet provider has given up saying I should contact Microsoft.
Internet Explorer is a little better. The funny part is some web sites load up right away. Pelican takes 15 minutes to open up. To post this rant took 10 minutes to open the page.
I've gotten some tips from searching and it sped up a bit but this system seems slow.

Rick V 06-29-2008 03:11 PM

Are you sure?

Bill Douglas 06-29-2008 03:28 PM

Sorry to hear Vista is being a PITA. I let the pre-install run on this new toshiba laptop and Vista has been the easiest and most reliable operating system yet (for me :)) Mabe the slow loading thin is to do with it looking for certificates? Just a guess.

Smarter minds than mine will come to your aid shortly.

Do what I did, disable all Vista specific things like the sideboard and change everything back to the XP or 2000 look. There are alot of things to change and I can't even remember all of them but since I've done that, I've had no problems with Vista. Also, go to files and folders and change the options there also and the Display options.

How much ram on your machine?

stomachmonkey 06-29-2008 05:10 PM

Who's your ISP?

Crappy DNS servers can kill the experience and make you think you have larger issues.

Brian 162 06-29-2008 05:26 PM

I have 3 gig of memory.

My ISP is Bell Sympatico. I try to open their website and won't open.
I try to get on to Mcafee's website and it seems like the computer won't allow the website to open up.The computer hangs up trying to connect. After 5-10 minutes I get unable to connect.
I can't get Windows update to work.
I'm taking my computer to a buddy who works in IT on Tuesday.

Should be plenty of RAM. Disable any and all McAfee products. If unsure, uninstall them.

Are you posting here on the same or different computer?

Can you get to any sites?

Your symptoms sound like lack of DNS altogether.

Vista sucks?

I dont classify Pelican as a "fast site".....

more often than not Pelican takes a long time to load*..

Proof: open Google... then try and open Pelican

which would you think should open more quickly?

*even when told the site is working perfectly

HardDrive 06-29-2008 06:02 PM

Did you turn off that crap with IE that checks the validity of each URL? Did you make sure its patched?

Download a different browser and try it. I'm partial to Opera.

Sounds hardware related honestly, time to check for errors on the nic, maybe errors elsewhere. I like Mule's suggestion that its ram, in that their may be an issue with some of it.

TimT 06-29-2008 06:43 PM

Sure whatever you say, sorry but google probably has a "google" more hits than this site...

I use different machines which have different isps every day....I can open a page like MSN in an instant...Pelican takes sometimes the time it takes me to refresh my glass of water..this is of course FYI

Pelican loads slowly often..also witness the pethora of double posts...

Rot 911 06-29-2008 06:46 PM

I agree, sometimes Pelican opening up is like watching paint dry.

slodave 06-29-2008 06:58 PM

I have to agree with Tim. Pelican is not very responsive. Pelican will hang and off I go to other site until the thread opens. Sometimes Pelican can be quick, but there is no rhyme or reason. At least Wayne was able to do away with the white screen of Pelican aka WSOP.

rattlsnak 06-29-2008 07:03 PM

Open up your command prompt, check your DNS and gateway addresses, and ping your host. Let us know the results.

Yup, even from down here in the south pacific it's fast. Allways fast too.
