What's everyone doing for the 4th?

I always plan very late for this kind of stuff. I'm debating between riding the bike up to Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon with the wife on back or driving down to Tucson, Nogales, Bibee, Sierra Vista, etc. Wifey just got her green card, so walking across to the Mex. side of Nogales might be a bit of a novelty for her. If we head north, I'm afraid of the traffic and crowds. I was agoraphobic in DC and now that I work from home and never have to deal with traffic, I'm even more so.

slodave 06-29-2008 07:31 PM

I'll be home, alone, again....

TerryH 06-29-2008 07:40 PM

My brother got sober so we can't get drunk and have bottle rocket fights anymore. Glad I still have scars to remind me of the fun times. Nothing like alcohol and gunpowder. LOL

gprsh924 06-29-2008 07:44 PM

Fireworks and attempting to burn as much gas as humanly possible between the boat and waverunner.

legion 06-29-2008 07:44 PM

The state of Illinois has allowed me to purchase sparklers.

Tobra 06-29-2008 07:45 PM

Working on cars all weekend.

Not doing fireworks this year, be enough fires without my starting any

legion 06-29-2008 08:00 PM

Be safe guys.

One of my best friend's brother in law decided to light off 6" mortars designed for electronic ignition--with a lighter last year. As they have VERY short fuses, one went off in his hand...

They managed to sew his cheek shut, but he has permanent nerve damage on the left side of his face and "tatooing". He also no longer has a right thumb.

jim72911t 06-29-2008 08:16 PM

Going to Seattle to watch fireworks over Lake Union, then interviewing with several companies the following week, as I am contemplating a move to the PNW.

Rick Lee 06-29-2008 08:17 PM

I used to take a closet hanger rod for aiming bottle rockets, sort of like a bazooka. NJ was pretty bad for fireworks, but there was a flea market in Bucks Co., PA where you could buy pretty good stuff. My mom was so cool back then that she didn't even get bent out of shape when we lit off bottle rockets in her VW cabrio on the way home from that market.

Slodave, go find a nice piece of a$s to hit.

Gogar 06-29-2008 08:24 PM

The "Heritage and Freedom Festival" in O'Fallon, MO. Big Head Todd, Candlebox (whoa!) and the Gin Blossoms.

Terror. Freedom. Fries.

Rick Lee 06-29-2008 08:28 PM

Candlebox? Wow. I saw them open for Rush a few times '94. Peter Clett is an excellent guitarist.

cantdrv55 06-29-2008 08:41 PM

BBQ at my house. We can see fireworks from at least 4 cities from my backyard.

jhynesrockmtn 06-29-2008 09:27 PM

Racing in the historics

Running a Formula Vee at the SOVREN Historics near Seattle, hopefully no fireworks while driving.

find some English people and shoot at them

Dottore 06-29-2008 10:08 PM

hashish and virgins

Porsche-O-Phile 06-29-2008 10:13 PM

Hanging out at home, working on my long list of stuff to do (holiday weekends are excellent opportunities to get caught up while everyone else is gone) and hopefully finding some time for a few fireworks and/or brewskis in there someplace.

Drive/travel out of town on a holiday weekend? F that.

rusnak 06-29-2008 10:14 PM

I'm driving the 911 to Morro Bay to spend the weekend with my parents, siblings, and their kids. Gonna take the new camera and some cigars and look for some interesting things to do, then catch the F1 race on Speed.

If anyone is in the area, stop by. The house is on PCH at the state beach entrance.

cantdrv55 06-29-2008 10:52 PM

Why do we celebrate Independence Day on July 4? Didn't America gain her independence from England much later like in 1783 (can't remember the month though but I'm pretty sure it wasn't in July)?

onlycafe 06-29-2008 11:24 PM

run over to boston for the pops concert and the fireworks.

+1 and completely satisfied with that too. :)

TerryBPP 06-30-2008 03:45 AM

Have some friends coming over from the east coast. Meeting up to take out a few boats and go over to Sanibel Island. Then back home for a good size party.

Anyone who is home alone is more than welcome to join the debauchery.

m21sniper 06-30-2008 03:47 AM

I figured i'd don my old cammies, dig a foxhole in the front yard, and scream "They're in the wire!" as i fire off Roman candles into the night time sky.

I like to keep my neighbors on their toes.

Umm....Going toThe "Heritage and Freedom Festival" in O'Fallon, MO.?
It's right down the street from me.
I didn't know.
I've got no 911 to trade for anymore though...

VINMAN 06-30-2008 04:05 AM

Big party at home. The Jersey shore is no place to travel on a holiday weekend! (unless you enjoy sitting in standstill traffic all day!)

dmcummins 06-30-2008 04:12 AM

Some of the wifes relatives are visiting so the wife is going nuts. Friday we have to take them to a Tim Mcgraw concert, taking the men golfing on Saturday, and the casino on Saturday night.

The wife is going to owe me big time.

So you sold your car? You at least still have a pair of seats in my basement.

sammyg2 06-30-2008 06:06 AM

BBQ in the back yard, swim in the pool all day with the family, and watch fireworks from Anaheim stadium or Disneyland at night.
No traveling, no dealing with dorks, just kicking back and enjoying my little piece of the world in private.

legion 06-30-2008 06:11 AM

Ugh.

I'm going to a party at a college friend's house.

I just got an e-mail that the best friend of the hostess (who married another friend of mine) just had a miscarriage at five months. She and her husband are understandably upset and have asked that no one bring it up--which I can appreciate. I wouldn't want to talk about it either in their situation. :(

varmint 06-30-2008 09:52 AM

MONKEY HUNT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HOOT! We'll be hosting a pair of Brit ladies...but be warned, when Jane Standen was here with her departed hubby, we went to the local gun club. She, the brit, was MUCH better with a handgun than her USA husband.

Probably because she's distantly related to this guy, sharing the same last name:

Tim Hancock 06-30-2008 10:50 AM

Every year we host a 4th party at our home for my old college/fraternity buddies and their families. Most of them live in the city....... their kids and a few of the men think that coming out to my place with a pond, atv's, minibikes, airplanes etc is something akin to going to Disneyworld (in fact some call it "HancockWorld"). It is a lot of work prepping for it and my wife gets cranky from it, but all us 40ish age guys have a blast acting like kids again. A couple of years ago we did a BMX jump into the pond, before that we waterskiied across the pond with a long rope and an ATV.

For some reason the wives don't seem to enjoy this as much as the guys and kids.;):D

I'll be spending the 4th at my wife's family camp in da UP of Michigan. Gas lights, wood sauna, watter from the well. It's pretty much heaven on earth.

Going to hang out with my first boss out of University in Kingston WA. I lost touch with him for the last decade and found him on LinkedIn recently. He is an ex-NSA, Chicago MBA mormon. There will be flags :)

Rot 911 06-30-2008 12:04 PM

Going up to visit the wife's family in Watertown, SD. Silly downtown parade, but the weather is generally nice.

July 4, 1776 is when America "Declared" independence from England...The Declaration of Independence.
