The Fairness Doctrine
 

The lefties are all over instituting a law to insure equal time for boring left wing idiots on talk radio. This is required to insure "fairness."

Since most newspapers & TV networks are far to the left, will the "fairness doctrine" provide for new newspapers & TV networks so that "fairness" can ensue in those areas as well?

I'd be all for it if they similarly applied it to the universities!

Right-wing talk radio continues to move--so this bill will regulate it while at the same time subsidizing left-wing talk radio (which has ceased to move).

I thought this thread would be about Obama being connected in another US tragedy, then giving no-bid/blank-check contracts to his own private company, while using the justice department for his personal whims to investigate right wing Americans and deny them travel, all while snorting up lines of drugs and lying to congress.

But in typical liberal BS, if you can't compete, it isn't fair, punish the ones who are successful. Lefties and their news sources have never been inclined toward playing the Blame Game. AM right wing hate-radio is all about getting people pissed off. Giving them just enough of the right kind of information so they will be absolutely INCENSED at what their idiotic gubmit has done. It's not just conservative hate-radio. Network TV news programs do this too. Routinely.

This is not about balancing left-wing and right-wing hate radio. You guys know as well as I do that the libs could never even scrape up enough liars to compete with the thousands of conservative talk (hate) radio guys. It's about balancing that tactic (incomplete information, presented in way designed to PISS OFF listeners).......with facts.

The govt should be involved with regulating what information is presented, and how it is presented?

Some govt guy or kommittee is going to listen to the radio all day . . . "In our opinion, your opinion was not presented with complete information, therefore we are going to do XYZ," or "In our opinion, you presented information in a way designed to piss off listeners, so we are going to limit your airtime."

the only talk radio i like is SPORTS radio talk. listen to some on the way home in the afternoon

What is left-winged radio? Other than the local college stations, I have yet to find "left winged radio".

That is because nobody listened to any of the left wing programs, so they were cancelled. Since the radiowaves belong to everyone, if the lefties don't get to use their share, the righties don't get to use theirs either

Another problem is that people who are aware and read up on topics are already outraged and need no help getting into rage mode. There is a limit to the amount of frustration one can carry around. How many examples of lies and deceit can the loyal bushies practice before I bust a blood vessel?

Since when is NPR left? Have you ever actually listened to more than 30 seconds of it? Most stories that they run of any significance have input from both sides of the political spectrum. They go out of their way to bring in people to give both sides, and usually, I learn from both of them.

If anything, NPR is completely centrist. That's why I asked where to find leftist radio.

Right. Americans find news boring. They prefer editorial. They prefer to be told what to think, particularly if the suggestion sounds like "You should be OUTRAGED!!!!!!!!!!!!! Look at what your gubmit has done." They prefer drama over information. Leftie programs are therefore not as popular as rightie programs.

I'm glad you asked. NPR is considered a communist, subversive program by the righties here. Facts presented in a non-dramatic, non-judgemental, non-accusatory fashion is communism. Selected facts presented in an effort to outrage listeners.....that's how the righties like their "news."

I think that the republicans secretly fund NPR to keep it on the radio, even though no one listens to it, ever, anywhere, at all. See...it's an easy target for them, so they keep it alive. They need easy targets, because the slightly harder ones...well, they get stumped easily.

Air America is still around sorta and Sirius has a few liberal talk stations. If you think the right talk is hate infested I suggest you give Sirius Left a listen, you don't know from hate.

I couldn't care less about NPR's political leanings IF they received no taxpayer funding. They are a prime example of a very popular channel that has no business getting subsidies, as they should have no problem at all standing on their own two feet. My guess is that they will never do so, as their success would defeat any further argument for the "Fairness Doctrine".

Unfortunately, we lose either way with this election, as both candidates care nothing about the First Amendment. No way will Obama rebuff Congress's efforts to reinstate the "Fairness Doctrine" if he's POTUS. And McCain's campaign finance law has already been vetted by the SCOTUS, which also thought nothing of trampling on free speech. The "Fairness Doctrine" (such an Orwellian name) has nothing to do with spreading left-wing gospel and everything to do with putting conservative talk radio out of business on smaller affiliate stations, which could never afford to devote "equal time" to stuff that no advertiser would want to touch. Air Amerika is a perfect example of why liberals don't want to let market economics run the radio business.

In principle, I certainly agree. Freedom is important. Freedom of speech is important. And quite frankly, I don't like the idea of regulating this area. But again, what's happening here is that we're looking for all sorts of ways to repair our broken system of elected representation. Nobody is happy with the crap going on in DC. The left and the right are disappointed. We're considering term limits, which I happen to think is another limitation on our freedoms, for the purpose of preventing us from making bad (voting) decisions. We're looking for ways to repair a system that is broken. The reason it is broken is because voters are misinformed. They are led to think one thing, but the truth is actually something else. We wouldn't need to repair anything if the typical voter could distinguish fact from editorial. This regulation under consideration is another doomed attempt to stop the misinformation. Stop the deliberate dissemination of hatred and outrage on the part of the media. They foster this crap because it SELLS. Sadly, it also misinforms and screws up our election system.

Recently, I HAMMERED a local editorial personality. Ken Schramm. He is an outrage-peddler. In this instance, he expressed outrage that our DOT was prohibiting a large prefabricated bridge section from entering the state because it did not meet our axle and vehicle load limits. He was deliberately trying to make people angry at DOT for this problem. He knew as well as I did, that the fault lay with the trucking company that KNEW the load limits and thought they could slip one through anyway. They gambled and lost. Our DOT was not only on the right side of the law (that is made by the legislature by the way, not DOT), but they were working HARD to find a way to get this truck moving again. The reason I tell this story is because at the end of my discussion with Mr. Schramm, I lowered the BOOM. I told him I hold him personally responsible for some of the bad decisions voters make due to their misplaced ANGER and OUTRAGE at gubmit. He misinforms. On purpose. For personal glory. And in the process, he screws up public policy decisions. He should be ashamed. His agenda is typical of right-wing anti-gubmit propaganda.

His side of the story was crystel clear. He stood at the weigh station with a microphone in his hand. His image, and voice, and 'story,' was on my television screen. Later, in direct conversation, his story did not change. On television he was expressing outrage that DOT was holding up this bridge section, which was expensive and necessary to the completion of the new Tacoma Narrows bridge. Rolling his eyes, he pretended to believe that DOT was responsible for load limit regulations. He has been at this (hate mongering) gig for a long time and KNOWS were regulations come from. He was picking on an innocent party, and he KNEW it. But gubmit-hate is low-hanging fruit for editorialists and opportunists. Apparently irresistable, as long as you don't care how badly you misrepresent facts and confuse citizens and voters for professional gain.

NPR is the closest thing to 'news' available on the radio these days. Sure it's slanted and Garrison Keeler needs a lit sparkler shoved up his ass to spark some life in him so somebody besides blue-hairs and shut-ins will listen to him.

To my mind i'd be thrilled if idiots like oreally and rush would be relegated to the mexican stations 3am time slots.

Why should the guys with the largest audiences be put into the worst time slots? Do you feel the same way about tv shows, newspapers, billboard signs and web advertising? Should my blog, which has zero traffic, be able to charge $10k for a banner ad, while Drudge should only be able to charge $5? What kind of socialist world do you want?
