OT guys! You active in the Tech forums too?
I very much enjoy PPOT. Sadly enough, it brings me a large part of my daily social activities. It also supplies me with a tremendous amount of world news, knowledge and laughter. Even crying. I think you guys that I 'meet' almost every day on OT are terrific. Like real life friends.
I came here on a need to know basis. Had to pick up the basic tech stuff when I got my 911 four years ago. Initially I spent most of the time in the tech forum. The last two years I spend 90% of the time in OT as its fascinating and I donīt have any current problems with my 911. I thought it interesting how many of you brothers hanging out here most days, also post in the tech forums. Poll form. No explanations or excuses necessary! :D |
I also post in the 928 forums, but infrequently, since the car is so reliable, and i rarely need help troubleshooting it's straightforward and quite simple mechanicals.
I also rarely drive it anymore nowaday. 8mpg x $4+ dollars a gallon is a no go for me. Thankfully, i have a garage. |
Active but not hyperactive.
|
I used to post over there allot but now it seems every tech question has been asked and answered a hundred times.
If they'd just use the search button .... |
My 911 really never needs anything, I read the for sales and parts for sale but havent' bought anything for a year. I drive it everyday and change oil. That's about it.
|
Since I sold my P-car, not so much.
I'll be back there once I get back in the saddle with a 911. :) |
Markus,
My story is the same as yours. Last month out of curiosity I took a peak. First few threads were, Where can I get a cup holder? Help with 1st valve adjustment? What size wheels will fit my car? Rather than reply "Use the search feature" I quietly slithered back down to the cellar. |
Another thing; I have read a couple of posts that seemed to imply that participation in the tech threads is somehow a prerequisite to posting in PPOT.
I disagree! :D |
Since I DIY, I post & very frequently search & learn. I have saved many man-hours, mucho $$$s & a whole lot of sweat & blood via the advice in Tech area.

Whats a Tech forum?? :p
Once in a while I post on it. My car has pretty much been trouble free since I got it. Plus any problems, I pretty much figured out myself. If I have a tip or some advice for someone, I'll post something. But otherwise, I'm much happier over here.:) |

My car is pretty much finished. Other than maintenance and the odd repair (it currently needs pedal bushings, a clutch cable and a new battery), my next potential tech issue will be a new transmission with short gears. But I've already decided on the gears, have a lwt. flywheel and know what sort of clutch I'll use, so the tech part has already been realized.
As Sammy says, the stuff over on the tech side has been asked and answered so many times, it gets tedious. The whole SSI vs. pre '75 heat exchangers, or whether to run 7 or 8-inch Fuchs is sort of old hat. I used to think these cars had an infinite level as to what one can learn about them, but in most instances, that seems to not be the case. Classifieds is fun, but I don't really need, want, nor have anything to sell. OT is always new and interesting. If at all, the liberal vs. conservative debates continues to give a person new opportunities to make an ass out of themselves, which is always entertaining. :D |

I used to be more active but the 911 has been quite reliable...
|
More active in the tech forum when my car is under the knife. Mostly in OT. I try and answer questions in the tech section as well.

Yes, thats what I think too. With a 911 there should not even be a need for a tech forum.
I think it was Vic Elford that was about to start a rally/race somewhere in southern Europe at one time. Porsche had let him have a 911 but they did not supply him with any spare parts, not even extra tires. Upon inquiring about it he got the reply: A Porsche donīt brake.. :D |

I am most active on the Classifieds, moreso than OT.
Sadly, my last substantive post on Technical: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/354578-early-engine-bay-electrical-panel-restoration.html no time to work on the cars, hoping to seam weld the E tub this August and post that, not much in Technical on the subject...it will most likely be November however. :( Dropping the motor on the S this weekend and moving that thread forward: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/413484-if-you-left-your-69-targa-field-tx.html |
My restoration project has been in mothballs for 2 years...so the Tech board is less interesting to me right now.
And the Tech board lacks the name calling and girl pics... the lifeblood of the internet. |

So, I guess what this thread is really about is those in OT have the reliable Porsches and are well-schooled on the mechanicals of the car.
It's good to be among wise and successful souls. :D |

Although, personally I have grown rather fond of Mule lately. Nice man! Hope you donīt take that as an insult, Mule. SmileWavy |
I am mostly a tech guy posting in the 944 forum on timing belts and such.
I come here looking for world news. There has been plenty of times I have heard things here first before other alternatives (news paper, TV etc...) Speedy:) |
This winter, I have rebuilt my motor and spent quite a bit of time on the engine rebuilding forum. It is a little different than the tech forum: much less frequented, but lots of very good advice and hardcore wrenchers there. I used to spend more time in the ppot forum, but I realized that arguing on internet is like yelling in space, so I used my energy to more constructive passtimes. I still read the threads, but do not participate much in the debates. I also think it has become a bit boring since Fastpat is no longer here.

I check it a couple times a day, but typically only post on occasion as my car is pretty well fixed up for the moment.

I answered a question that Souk asked once--I consider my Tech forum days complete. :)
|
I too started out mainly in the tech section, learning lots in the the early days of DIY, but lately I haven't had the need to ask many questions so I just try to help pass along what I've learned to others. I still check the tech section first thing, and then come over to OT to see what Mule has to bray (stolen from a recent post) about Obama, and to learn how liberal and ignorant I am :). Seriously, I tire of the politics (not my thing at all), but I generally find intelligent, yet different perspectives from my own, and there's not a day that goes by that I don't learn something here. That's my rationalization anyway, the real answer: "it's addictive"!
|
I mostly post in the tech forums (911 Technical and the 911/930 Turbocharging forums). As for OT, I generally lurk and only make an occasional post. I don't consider myself an "OT guy"...so maybe I shouldn't even have answered this thread...:D
|
I used to only post in the Tech forum for probably the first couple of years on Pelican. I still post there and "auto-x/racing" on occasion, but I don't post there unless I really have something of value to add to a thread.
|
I used to be, but I hardly ever drive the 911 any more...
|
That is a shame Thom

I hardly go to the track anymore, which is another reason I'm not in the Tech or Auto X and Racing forums so much these days. Admission and gas (mostly race gas) adds up to over $300, which is a little too dear for a day of fun. |
I started on the tech threads as I am no mechanic what so ever, although just did my first valve adjustment yesterday, :D (with help).
Started lurking here then posting. Is a rough crowd, have been threatened with physical harm, (you know who you are ;) ), and of course been called a pussy etc etc, as just about everyone has I suppose. But a WHOLE lot of knowledge & diversity here and on the techs. |
I think I'm just as active on the 911 and 930 forums.
I was talking to an old friend a few months ago that I don't see very often. He's also a Pelican. I started to describe what I'd done the 930 lately. He said he already knew and that he'd been keeping up with it. He said he follows Pelican but doesn't post very often. It got me wondering how many folks are out there following our rants that don't participate. |
