Oh, I think I need to be in this thread as well. Got two new rifles recently (although the term rifle really loosely describes one).

I'll play... posted a teaser thread about this a while back, but got my GSG 1911-22. More mags coming soon, got a falling plate match coming up! :)

GSG 1911-22 and my Rock Island Armory GI model. You can get both for not much more than a run of the mill Colt, never mind a collectable war horse...

No, seriously, I know that 3 or 4 of you here are and I'm seeking your advice.

I've had rifles, no hand guns. I want a hand gun, mostly to keep in the house for self defense (and blowing away terrorists, should the opportunity arise ).

Glock 22 a good choice?

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1214959106.jpg

Well, not really.....these just followed me home!

Out of all these, the Sig 220 (45 ACP) is probably my favorite.

Anyone know where to get one of these:

Call for Boycott of Starbucks on Valentine's Day Over Gun Policy

Glock, with multiple top-ends.
Same base and trigger pull, with the ability to shoot .40 for home defense, or 9mm for plinking.

LOL!

I shot my friend .44 with magnum loads... like holding a stick a dynamite in your hand!

But I would love to own one someday... or a .454.

I have a shotgun and a 9mm for home defense... I read up on it a lot and yes the .40 and .45 have " more stopping power" however if you look at the damage a 9mm can do I feel it is adequate for the job.

YMMV

"stopping power" == shot placement. Meaning a well placed .22LR can stop humans effectively. IMO caliber choice is not nearly as important as gun fit and handling. I am not buying this gun for SD...it is part of a new sport that I am taking up with my son. All my firearms are locked away - accessible within a minute or two but definitely not 'handy'.

All I can say is try to borrow/rent as many handguns as you can prior to buying. That advice has been echoed on this board by many and is sound. Once I had the field narrowed down to 3 I put 100 rounds through them back to back to make my final decision. I expect this M&P to be my one and only handgun...well it and a 686...honest...

I love it...honest...

Seriously though, everyone needs a .22, cheap practice, and .22's don't really count. Plus a grizzly defense handgun just in case you ever go fishing out West. And a Hi Power, or maybe a 70 Series Gold Cup, you know, for an investment. And what about some cowboy action shooting...

flipper35 01-25-2012 08:20 AM

The nice thing about a 1911 is the .22 conversioins for them. Same grip and handling but cheap plinking and takes only a minute to switch between .45 and .22 calibers. Plus they fit my hand nicely.

Bill Douglas 01-25-2012 09:37 AM

I fire .38 wadcutters through this thing. Cheap as chips and very accurate.

As you see in my above post, I spent the extra $ (not much) to just get a whole new 1911 in 22lr.

I agree 100%, but what do I know?!

Bill Douglas 01-25-2012 10:18 AM

Another thing to factor into the selection process. If a "situation" went to court you would certainly look better if you shot the guy once in self defence, one bullet, than emptied a magazine into him.

Which makes a .45acp look a good option instead of a .22 or a 9mm.

AI85 01-25-2012 12:40 PM

A Glock doesn't even compare to a HK or SIG!
But nothing compares to the Colt Python! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1327527581.jpg

I was always taught to empty the gun except for 2 rounds. A) To appear to be in fear of your life. B) you still have two if there is a second perp.
If you come for me, I'm tapping till you drop. If there are no cameras maybe even a kill shot for good measure.

Actually I don't know anything, I'm just talking through a hole in my head. All I know is what I've read from you guys already. BUT it does sound Fun.

targa911S 01-25-2012 07:32 PM

personal defense is not about fun.

JavaBrewer 01-25-2012 08:21 PM

The odds of actually needing a gun for personal defense are so incredibly remote...I prefer to concentrate on the fun part myself. YMMV.
