Any Mercedes tech here? Need a little help.

While working on a buddies 3.0 Liter Merc, we broke the "tit" off of the harmonic balancer that the crank sensor gets it's signal from. Being a Saturday, we didn't have many options other than to leave it and work on other parts.

My questions is how to put in a new one? Seems to me like it would be rather simple to drill out the old and tap in a new one. I have searched Pelican as well as the Internet and have found nothing to help.

Any thoughts?

Replace the HB with one from a junkyard or parts car. They come off pretty easily once you remove all the stuff that's in the way, like fan and belts, should be able to do it w/o draining/removing radiator depending on model. They are held on w/ about 8 little bolts, (10mm heads), then knock it on the sides w/ a mallet if necessary to get it loose.

DO NOT loosen or remove the large (center) bolt on front of crankshaft that is in the middle of the little bolts. It is not holding HB on, but if you remove it and then pull on stuck HB, it will pull the hub off the crank and possibly damage the key that locates it. Then you will really have timing issues that will baffle you, everything will seem to be assembled correctly but (tit) will be transmitting at wrong crank position. Keep it simple and replace HB, you will be back on the road in no time.

I'm not going to ask how you broke it.

Thanks Denis.

The engine is in the car but no accessories bolted back on as he had the head reconditioned. We were going to replace the chain guides but couldn't get the bottom crank pulley off to get to all of the bolts on the cover.

(Yeah, don't ask how we broke the nubbin.)

I readlily admit to knot knowing a thing about Mercedes engines but after spending a little time on his, it pretty much seems like any other. it even has Bosch CIS, just like my SC.

So , in your opinion, the only solution is to get another balancer?

Yep. But they're cheap and plentiful at MB junkyards.
