VW (meaning air cooled) drivers are pretty much the only ones who wave back at me 100% of the time. pretty much 100% of the Detroit Iron folks just sneer ... odd, since that is the behoviour they ascribe to Porsche drivers, and Porsche drivers wave back at least 50% of the time - even when I was driving a Firebird ... oh well. If I like seeing it on the road, I wave at it, and if they want to sneer, who cares.

Bugs Rock!

bugs were fun with close ratio gears and 200+ hp, shifting at 7400 rpm the pushrod motors were pistols.
Same car 10 years later.

what kind of mileage do they get? If a short answer can be had what years are consider the best

Gotta be honest, I don't think I would want to commute in one. Pretty crude machines. On the upside, they are quite reliable. I have been amazed by my mine.
