I hate to see that happen to anyone, even if its a Corvette! What is worse, the actual newspaper article stated that he didn't have insurance!!!

Any tool that spends that kind of cash on a C-4 (especially a fake ZR1) does not have my sympathy. And no insurance? Here's your sign.

I saw that article in the paper this morning. There is no way in hell that it was worth $25,000 today. He is also an idiot for not having insurance

I agree - sucks that it had to happen to him, but no insurance? You made your bed, now lie in it. In the winter, fire and theft insurance on my 911 is about $15/month. There's no excuse not to have basic coverage. I literally would not sleep well at night if there wasn't at least that basic coverage on my car.
And yeah, sinking money into an 89 [gold chains and hairy chests] corvette to make it look fast and go slow is I guess the 50-something equivalent of a ricer boy.

$25k? Hahahahahaha! I feel for any car guy that loses his pride and joy, but an '89 Corvette with a body kit is NOT worth $25k. $5k, maybe. When I looked at the photos, I wasn't too suprised he is a Corvette guy.

A car guy is a car guy. So he isnt a genious, it still sucks. I have a friend that is a finance guru, and he is amazed at how we all make bad choices daily with money. He thinks we are all morons as well, but are we? Maybe he isn't smart enough to know better.
I think it sucks. He has had that car for a long time. Wether or not he made stupid choices, like making it look like a fake ZR1, is irrelavant. If that were a fellow pelican people would be telling him how much that sucked. Anyway, my .02

Friends had a party on the 4th. We were taking our boats out the next morning so I crashed at there house. I had mine parked in their front driveway.
They live on the water so we shot some big mortars and big bottle rockets off behind the house. I went to get the boat ready the next morning and found a big bottle rocket laying in the bow of the boat on top of the seat cushions. Luckily it hit the floor and the windshield 1st (you could see the black scuffs). Must have burned out. I got lucky. |

Yep, I keep comp on the 951 in the winter when I don't drive it. It was a poor choice and now he has to deal with the consequences.

My 914-6 clone (and I'm sure yours also) is worth considerably more than the 914-4 it started out as (this is probably the first car I'll actually make money on!). His ZR-1 "clone" (read body-kit/badging) is worth less than had he left the car in stock condition. That's where the "idiot" factor kicks in...

Usually building an RS clone either a) doesn't involve double the value of the car in added costs or b) does, and significantly improves the performance of the car, in addition to improving looks. My 911 is halfway there in looks - it has RS flares and a ducktail. Total cost to get it there was $1000 for the ducktail (incl. shipping and painting). Flares were on there when I bought it (for $10K). I could spend the value of the car putting in a 3.6 varioram and a G50 tranny, upgraded brakes and cooling, and I'd have the most amazing 911 in the world. Or I could spend that money making it look like a 993 outside with the original 2.4L engine and crappy carbs, and have a poseur-mobile, in which case I would likely get flamed around here, as the many ebay abominations do.
Ok, maybe I'm a bit hard on it because it's an 80s vette, and I absolutely detest those cars, but that's only the beginning of the problems with this story. I can't believe any "car guy" wouldn't have basic fire and theft. Even on a restoration that's not going see the street for years. Houses burn down, cars (even projects) get stolen. I would think particularly in a resto you'd have lots of flammable chemicals around, and bits and pieces and tools lying all about, increasing the hazard of a fire. It's just common sense.

Well...not necessarily. Here's my '79 SC:
![]() But, at least I'm grounded in reality. I know it isn't worth much! All kidding aside, I'd be furious if someone burned-down my car with fireworks, even if it was a Pinto. Last edited by Danny_Ocean; 07-10-2008 at 11:39 AM.. |
