What do you guys think of them any thoughts? Thinking about getting a first generation one rather than a 95/96 993 which would be around $10k more. They seem like a fun little car.

Nice. And sort of rare. At least I don't see a lot on the street, which makes them more special than the convertibles or sedans.
I'd get a 2001 if possible. It had the 3.2 liter S54 engine, which was 315 hp as opposed to earlier 3.2s that made 240 hp. They're pretty fast on the track.

I remember reading/watching a review of an M-coupe, where they compared it to the Boxster. The Boxster was a scalpel wielding surgeon, the M-coupe an ax murderer. Basically they said you just b!tch-slap it around a track and love every second of it. Supposed to be silly fun cars, especially with the S54. Plus, at least in my opinion, they're incredible looking. Nothing on the road looks like an M-Coupe.
For me, compared to a Boxster it's a no-brainer. I'd take a 993 over an M-Coupe, but as you said there's a pretty big price difference. What about a 996? Get over the fact that they're water-cooled, and it's a LOT of car for not much money. Also, E46 M3s are getting pretty cheap.

If you pick the 993 you will have made the right decision and conversely, If you pick the M coupe you will have made .....the right decision.
Both are great cars, and you can't go wrong with either one. If you are a die-hard Porsche guy like me I would go for the 993. You know the 993 will hold it's value better. But if money is an issue go with the M coupe and never look back. The M coupe is one of BMW's last "good looking" cars. It's all in what you want. Do you really like the handling of a 911 or would you prefer a more traditional front engine, rear wheel drive layout? The M coupe is really in a class of it's own. It's not really a sports car, but it is. It's not a hot hatch, but it is. It's not a GT car, but it is... The M coupe embodies so many different design aspects into an interesting and fast package. In years to come I see the M coupe as becoming a very desirable automobile. It's so rare and does so many things well that it would be crazy for it not to become a classic. If you can get a 2001 or up M coupe for the right price go for it. Another way to look at it is you already have a classic 911 so why not try something different. Let us know what you decide. All this talk about the M coupe makes me want one now!

My boss had a '99 M coupe. He loved it and sold it another guy at work. He loves it too.
He did have to do some weld repairs to the rear suspension for a known weakness, but nothing major. I drove it a few times. It's a great driving car, but a little short on leg room compared to a 3 series.

I've been wanting one, but I'd have to sell some of the VW's in order to be able to afford one.

I thought 993s are fairly rare these days.... I haven't seen one M coupe for sale locally in SoCal.

Get a good mouthpiece. You'll keep your fillings that way.
