My Sister getting married to...A woman.

Yep, she's a lesbian who is finally tying the knot with the girl she has been with since 1983. There are six people allowed to be part of the ceremony in city hall. I decided to skip it. I don't agree that the word "marriage" should be used when to people of the same sex agree to a union. But I do think they should have the same benefits that married people are given. Is it wrong that I protest? She and I disagree but we still are very close, and get along famously. Thoughts?

Seems like a no brainer to me. You've already said you don't condone same sex marriages but you DO love her as your sister. By not attending the ceramony you're just putting actions to your words.
I'd say wish her the best life and love have to offer and carry on being good siblings.

Is your relationship with your sister more important than a what some random govt institution decides to call same-sex union?

If you feel that her 'union' should have the same rights and privileges as any 'marriage' what difference does it really make what it is called?

In weddings I have heard both words used to describe the event.

If you feel that what she is doing is wrong, well you are entitled to your opinion. If you don't however feel what she is doing is wrong and just want to argue over what it is called then you are being petty and I would wonder what you are hoping to accomplish?

Is she supposed to say during her toast "while my brother supports us; nobody call this a marriage - please use the term 'union' or 'domestic partnership' to describe today's party otherwise he might leave and I'll cry."

Again the question really is do you agree or disagree with her bring with a woman instead of a man.

A lot of times in life you are faced with choices and most of those times are one time deals - with family myself I like to err on the side of support if I feel truly torn.
