What valve are you using? That does not look like the electric valve on mine that only opens when the pressure drops.

Do you have it setup to pre-oil on startup?

I have a remote switch that will be within reach of the drivers seat. I can trip it manually if I want to pre-oil on start-up. My biggest concern is that 3 quarts extra oil in the sump may be too much oil and cause secondary problems such as oiling the cylinders or flooding the top end of the valve train.

You can pre oil by turning on the switch before hitting the ignition while there is no oil pressure. Once the engine starts and there is pressure up to the minimum of the valve it closes. I have the old style valve and changed to the pressure set one about a year ago and have noticed a vast improvement in my oiling.
