What do you say about past drug use?

I know there are plenty of people on this board who have had experiences with drugs. Some have had hard struggles to get away from them. Others just moved on from that phase in their life with little effort.

I basically *cough* stopped by the time I turned 25, well over ten years ago. I was part of the rave scene, out grew that, and got away from the drugs at the same time. I didn't think my drug use was that serious, but I have told trusted friends since, and they have informed me a using ecstasy, marijuana and cocaine at the same time means you are no longer the in the minor leagues.

Are you honest with people if this comes up in conversation? I think I have shocked people by admitting drug use at dinner parties. What the hell am I supposed to say? Lie and tell them I was a church deacon at the time?

I was in the major leagues then.

I have no problem sharing my history, if the occasion is appropriate. I would be honest if asked. Anyone who would judge me based on my past "transgressions" is probably not worth the worry.

Best,

I wouldn't tell strangers you're "presently" a user, that is unless you don't care if you're taken seriously. Keep it to youreself.

I stopped smoking / selling when I turned 20. haven't been back since. Means nothing to me. These days i pretty much shun anyone who's still getting off on being high as an adult.

It all depends on the situation. If it's part of a casual conversation I'd say everyone has their history and I'm no exception. If details are that important then I'll give details. I'll never be ashamed of the roads I've traveled and I'll never deny the journey. I value the experience but am totally grateful for the fact that I survived it all and it's behind me.

About the same as the above.

Course I still do drugs in some ways. Did a drug called Jim Beam last night. Just one but its still a drug. Even do another drug far too often. Did one yesterday called Dr. Pepper and sugar and caffein is a drug of sorts.

I'm a musician, everybody assumes I have a history, maybe even a present. I don't care let them think what they want.

I'll bet those that were "shocked" were feigning shock to maintain their own outward persona. Very few people I know have NEVER done ANY recreational drugs of any kind, and that includes people from all walks of life, from minimum-wage workers to mechanics, to lawyers, doctors and judges.

I remember having a conversation with my mom when Bill Clinton's "I did not inhale" thing was in the news. I was in my early 20s then, past the high school/early college drug phase, but still young enough to need strong parental guidance. My mom said something to the effect of 'well of course he smoked pot when he was younger, it was the 60s. Would you really want a leader who had absolutely no experience in their life, good and bad?' I think it was a really good point - basically, that when used responsibly and in moderation, drugs are part of the experience of growing up, plain and simple. It's possible to smoke pot and still be a responsible person.

.......it took me until almost 40 to realize that "using" was a childish habit/need. Even then I never did anything to the extreme, never missed work or appointments or let it affect my personal relationships.

I viewed it as 'casual' use. Just like most people view alcohol consumption. It has it's place and time. But the real coss-roads were when I met my current GF and she asked why I did it. I did not really have a good answer. So I quit all cold turkey, no big deal. I still drink socially though. I do miss the 'easy" up or down state of mind sometimes

The Truth or the 5th. Choose depending on situation. I usually go with the former.

People need more minding their own business in modern America. I would not lie or refuse to answer but a change of subject or a euphemism such as "experimented" should be enough. This is an Oprah world we live in.

It never made sense to me to even try drugs, or smoking for that matter.

I'm probably one of the few that can say they've never done 'drugs'. If you take it Joe's way I've had a drink or three, and use caffeine most daily. But as far as the 'illegal' stuff I've never touched it.

legal smegal,
what BAD here, is NORMAL elsewhere,
I'd rather you be paranoid (stoned ) while driving,
then drunk and think you can.
