Wow, I'm out of town (Porsches to Oxford) for a few days and come back to all this commotion. George (kach22i) sent me an email to says he's not coming back, I really hope that's not the case. I trust the moderators judgement and I remember that these are Wayne's forums and that helps me keep things in perspective.

speeder 07-29-2008 12:31 AM

The moderating on this board has always been downright weird. Not saying good or bad, (although I certainly have my opinions), but just weird. Not banning people who are just complete, unmitigated trolls and then mass-banning good members for saying common, mild profanity when it's always been tolerated. Weird. And schitzo. i guess that's why Wayne finally had to step in and hit the over-ride button on you guys.

5,4,3,2,1...cue Wayne jumping in to express his undying confidence in all of his moderators, it's just unwritten web board protocol. Sort of like Bush, ( or most other presidents), giving full support to cabinet members 1 day before they "resign".

Now I'll probably get banned under the new order, frankly it would do me a favor. I spend an inordinate amount of time here in a very addictive fashion, it would be like when I got 86ed from a certain guy's nightclubs in L.A. for telling him to pound sand. Biggest favor anyone had ever done for me, I used to be addicted to nightlife and it was an empty existence but very social. I replaced it w/ this board. I still have a vibrant life during daytime hours and early evenings, but late nights I'm here.

m21sniper has been reinstated.

The rest of the folks on Ban Island that are there because of the 'language barrier' will be reinstated this Tuesday. The parole board met, and they will be released due to good behavior... (aka: per Wayne, the bans will be lifted on Tuesday)

So coming back on Tuesday will be:
K. Roman
DARISC
Mule
kachi22i

-Z-man.

George didn't leave, the black helicopters finally got him.:p

m21sniper 07-29-2008 07:10 AM

In actuality there were no bans- it was just an elaborate hoax. Like the Apollo landings.

billwagnon 07-29-2008 07:14 AM

Is P-O-P really banned?

The board should have a "Ban Island" thread so we know what is up and who gets back, when. SmileWavy

Z-man 07-29-2008 07:16 AM

Ok - the bans have been lifted on:
K. Roman
DARISC
Mule

Regarding trolls: they are a crafty group. They have an uncanny ability to stay just barely within the limits of the forum rules, yet be able to rile up folks to a mass hysteria. That makes it difficult for a mod to see what's really going on. Trolls especially love warm, damp places and Off Topic Forums, where their modus operandus is easily hidden given the nature of such forums.

Regarding the mass bans that occurred over the weekend: the OT Forum had reached a boiling point from our point of view. Todd and I communicated with Wayne regarding this. We focused on one simple aspect (language) with the hopes that forum members would simmer down a little and this place would return to 'normal.' Did the plan work? Yes and no. Most folks here got the message, but on the other side, a couple of folks got upset due to my actions. Throwing out the babdy with the bathwater, I suppose.

Regarding m21sniper: Yes, he was banned permanently. But we all know that the only permanent things in life are death and taxes. After he was banned, someone stated that m21sniper isn't deserving of a permanent ban, to which I replied:
He is welcome to contact me and we can discuss this.
He did contact Wayne, who reinstated him. I've PM'd sniper to clear the air, we did a fist bump. and all is well. Did I overreact? Most certainly. Things were done to rectify the situaion, and the incident is over. Life goes on...

Well, in this case, Wayne saw that my iron fist rule was a little too harsh. So he intervened and made "the time fit the crime." That's why this is his board, and his rules. But he doesn't want his boards full of trolls, personal attacks, inappropriate language...etc. either. And he doesn't have the time to moderate these boards all the time either.

As stated before, Todd and I do have lives outside of OT, so we rely on folks here to notify us of problems. Of late, we were getting a lot of complaints about personal attacks, trolls, inappropriate comments...etc. So we focused on one area - the language - and people got banned, there was anarchy, and all was not well in the land of PPOT. But the message did get delivered.

Group hugs are ghey.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Rick Lee 07-29-2008 08:39 AM

I just don't get what the big deal is with mild profanity. Of all the other BBS's I frequent, this is the only one that blocks out certain words. Well, China Daily's does too, but that's a state-controlled newspaper BBS. How many children really surf PPOT? It's one thing to not have porn photos up here. But I highly doubt anyone under 18 even visits PPOT, let alone gets involved in heated political debates here. Your average HBO series has more profanity in one episode than I read here in a week.

cairns 07-29-2008 08:56 AM

I miss the Mule already.

Mule 07-29-2008 08:57 AM

Don't pay the ransom. I've escaped!

Not really, I made early parole! Thanks guys.

I'm not going to use profanity anymore, but from now on I will be naked while typing all my posts!

dhoward 07-29-2008 09:31 AM

And that's different how?

Much more manly. ;)

While i agree in principle....it is Wayne's board. Which pretty much settles that.

I've been fist bumping since the 80s. It is extremely common here.

I can vouch for sniper. Indeed, it was a fist bump, and not a group hug.

Personally, I agree with the language policy. When I owned BMWs I used to browse Bimmerforums, every post had someone dropping the f-bomb, especially in OT. It came across as a bunch of teens entirely convinced that they were the coolest kids in their school because they drove a $3000 BMW and cussed all the time. Wait, I just described 95% of the members on Bimmerforums........

PPOT is different, because we are (mostly) adults. Are your emails at worked laced with profanity? I'm no saint, I've been known to be colorful from time to time (especially when working on cars), but rarely is it required to make a point.

+1

We are generally a classy bunch and profanity shouldn't be necessary. That being said, I am old enough to remember a time when profanity just wasn't common.

Z-man and Nostatic, your efforts are appreciated!

I wonder if using a foreign language instead of English, would make a difference???

I've heard profanity called "lazy speech".

Insert your favorite 'bomb' when you're searching for content...

I've only complained a few times in the last few years. ( only extreme or offensive posts )
Are you suggesting members should feel free to 'notify' as we see fit?

For me, I enjoy the more mature and thoughtful posts here.
The obscenity ruins that.

“When a man uses profanity to support an argument, it indicates that either the man or the argument is weak - probably both” unkn

But Twain has a different take:

“Under certain circumstances, profanity provides a relief denied even to prayer.”

But generally,

“Profanity is the weapon of the witless" inkn:)

In the military, as Seahawk can tell you, swearing by officers in front of enlisted is a crime under the Joint Ethics Regulations. I didn't know that as a Company Grade officer leading infantrymen, and I'm glad....more glad that the men didn't know. I'm more refined now, not due to JER, more due just to maturity.

What if the "foreign language" is one found on television? There was a television show called Farscape the replaced what seemed to be the 'eff' word and replaced it with the word "frail" they used it in the same context as people do on the streets, but apparently, the FCC screeners were okay with it.

Can we, huh? Can we? Can we? ;)

Frak.

When I was the Airboss on a ship, I broke the JER every third word:cool:

The Aviation Bos'un Mates are great kids but are often elocution-challenged both in transmit and receive:)

Tanj from Larry Niven comes to mind...
