Pre paid cell phone?
Okay, a kitchen remodel will begin here sometime next month. In the interest of preserving a marriage, I plan on hitting the road the day the work crew shows up. Cindy agrees with this, will call me when it's over.
Never have bothered with a cell phone. But figure I'll need one on this trip. Anybody have thoughts on the pre-paid phones? Any one brand better than another?

This is an important question, I suggest you ask it twice.

I've used a T-Mobile for the last 2 years. You can buy a T-Mobile phone at Target anywhere from $25 up to $200 depending on the features you want. You can also buy the cards to increase your minutes there also although I do mine over the computer. You have to buy $20 of minutes every 90 days to keep your phone number so it works out to less than $7 a month if you don't use the phone much. I buy $100 worth at a time which gives me 1000 minutes and the minutes then roll over each month.

I've had a few when I was out of the country. Don't know about in the US. However, given that you've never had one, you probably want a cheap one, you don't need to pay for text messaging, voicemail, surfing the net, etc. Also check the terms. Some I think charge you as much as a dollar/day just to have access, or eat up your pre-paid minutes for daily access, whether you use it or not. Don't load up on the pre-paid minutes if your not going to use them up.
