Did you Hug your Crank today ?

Some pictures for your enjoyment

While some of us sleep, some of us were hugging a Crankshaft, 5 days total to remove crankshaft from engine bay out of engine room and new one installed, lots of sleepless nights but we got it done.

Enjoy the photos

Dayum! That's a big crank! (which is what my girlfriends always say...).

Are you working in Port Everglades?

Next time tell the captain to break down in China. They could have installed that thing for 1/50 the cost.

From Industry Newsletter:

‘SHOCKING’ FAILURES OF NEW ENGINES
A “shocking” number of damages to engines, often aboard new ships, indicate that machinery systems are not becoming more reliable, the president of the Society of Consulting Marine Engineers and Ship Surveyors has complained. Speaking in London on “man’s inhumanity to machines” at a meeting of the International Institute of Marine Surveying, John Lillie suggested that “the drive for capital cost reduction, operational efficiency, fuel economy and environmental acceptability have allowed the computer-generated engine to become a reality without taking into account the failure of humans to perform like machines.” Nearly 10% of main engine damages, said Mr. Lillie, happens to new ships, with the quality of many newly-delivered engines leaving much to be desired. He was particularly critical of the quality of workmanship and materials provided by sub-contractors in China and elsewhere, which represented, he said “a worrying trend.” Casualty statistics indicate that at over 40%, machinery damage is the largest category of incidents, although only represents only 19% of the cost of claims. He had asked 50 surveyors around the world to send him details of damages they had attended during a two-month period. The “horrendous” returns revealed 127 cases, involving products of all major manufacturers. Average costs of main engine repairs was $500,000, while for auxiliaries it was $300,000. The surveyors’ president pointed to turbochargers and crankshafts as areas causing concern, and high claims. (Lloyd’s List, 7/11/2008.)

I installed a neutron beam shutter this week. It weighed close to 100,000 lbs. That crankshaft looks pretty wimpy to me.

Hey Juan,

What kinds of clearances do you run on the mains and rods on something like that? What range of oil pressure? 10W-40, or synthetic?
