The Kids in Newport Beach this week

The first big trip for my 17 yo Son, Him and the Water Polo team are playing in the Junior Olympics for a week around the Newport Beach area, he just landed and called, the first thing he said was, "Dad, you should see all the cool cars out here, Cool Porsche's, 914's, saw a really nice Targa, etc," You have to understand he comes from West Michigan, mostly Dutch and very few Porsche's. Sounds like its going to be a great time, I told him, wait till you feel the Ground move!

Newport Beach is a pretty cool locale with lots of hot cars and hot girls. He should be in heaven.

Craig,
Congrats on having a son dedicated to what polo demands. Guys just love to make fun of the Speedo but there isn't a H.S. football player that can stand up to the aerobic rigors of what a championsghip caliber waterpolo training regimen demands. Bet your boy is eating you out of house and home these days, huh? My kids did.

I'm very familiar with what your son is doing. My now 25 year old daughter and my 27 year old son (who is a new father himself) were both two year All CIF Waterpolo Players locally at Whittier La Serna and played throughout the Southern OC tournaments at all those schools that will be at the Jr Olympics your son is at now. He probably won't be able to break away but if he can see Lido Island,he'll get an eyeful of auto candy...not to mention the OTHER kind of candy. Again, congrats.

My two daughters will be in that tournament as well. Good luck.

I worked in Newport for 18 years before selling my business. I now work in inland (the Inland Empire is what it's called) and I can attest to your son's observations. The 911 (and other fine car) quotient is huge down there. Next, he'll be noticing the fine women - mark my words!

Well the kids having a ball, went to Huntington Beach for a day, they have been playing games the last two days, one of the Moms called us and said your kid looks like a lobster, he is not used to playing in out door pools, The first game was at Santa Margarita High School, he said he has never seen such a nice pool. I hope he has plenty of money!!

Are you and your family going to be Orange County for next saturday?
If so, and sounds like he likes cars as well, you have to go to our weekly "Cars and Coffee" at the Irvine Spectrum which is around 5-6 miles from Newport. Get there at 630AM and you are done by 830...

Hope you can attend! Last week included the Lambo club with around 20. Two weeks prior was the Porsche club with around 30-40...
And that is just the tip of the iceberg. Yesterday there was an early Ferrari 166 Barchetta (yes you read right) and a Bugatti EB; no Jaguar D-types this week.

we used to make fun of the football players in hs - few of them could have survived a typical polo workout. And they get to wear pads while we got kicked and punched with only a speedo on.

We used to train at NTC and then Miramar pools. Outdoor pools are the norm out here, but season games are typically late afternoon so sun isn't an issue. Tournaments otoh are another story, and sunscreen is a must.

while I was playing water polo, I consumed 9,000 to 13,000 calories a day. my resting heart rate was in the high 50's.
6'1" and a spindly 155 pounds. Nostatic, how are your knees?
any problems?

when I was playing I was 6'1" 170, and resting HR was low 50's. I was probably eating about the same number of calories...my neck was wicked thick.

my knees are bad, but not from polo (at least I don't think so). More from softball and coyotes...

The amount of food these kids eat is amazing! I don’t know what other HS do but after all of our games along with all other area Schools we always host a huge Pasta Dinner when they get done with the game, huge amounts of food consumed, and it aint going to fat!
