No firsthand knowledge, but a former co-worker worked at a Porsche/Ferrari/etc. repair shop and he said that the Ferraris were a joke to work on and weren't reliable at all. He said that they were all broken all the time and the Porsches came in for regular maintenance mostly.

Never owned one, but have been told that pcar parts are cheap in comparison. Most Ferrari parts are made by them, no competition for price.

I had the pleasure of driving a 348 one evening followed directly be a 993. The Porsche was a solid reliable car, as you probably would expect. I would have no hesitiation jumping into that every morning and driving to work. The Ferrari was totally opposite. It looked good from the outside but driving it was terrible. It felt like a glorified kit car be comparison. It rattled like a can of loose bolts and the clutch was unpredictable and very heavy. I'm sure it would be really difficult to drive in traffic and if I was driving it to work I'd hope my boss would be very understanding as I'd never have the confidence that it would get me there.

Maybe I just happened to drive a bad one but it certainly took a car off my wish list for good.

I've owned a few and can say that you will spend an average of $1-2K per year on maintenance. They can be very reliable if maintained properly. Sadly, many are not and have lots of deferred maintenance. The 348 and later cars have some issues with interior cosmetics, too. Some of the materials used have not held up well. I'd strongly recommend you stay away from the open cars and consider only coupes. The open cars drive poorly.

Before you go too far down the road, drive one and see if you fit, and if you even like the way a Ferrari drives. Some do, some don't.

348's like all ferraris have their own model-specific and year-specific problems which are very expensive to fix. and the major service is not inexpensive. go over to ferrarichat and read everything you can and ask questions. the community over there is exactly like here, only for ferrari. ive learned a ton by lurking there. the owners there are very knowledgeable and passionate about their cars

i dont buy the ferrari's are unreliable opinion. if they are, its because people get over their heads with the price of purchase and cant afford to maintain and update the systems. the cars are old, just like our 911.

my 911 is awaiting a new fuel accumulator. until i install it and it proves to me that that is the reason my car wont start when its hot, i consider it unreliable.

there is nothing inherently unreliable about ferrari. their engines are very strong but the tolerances dont allow you to just drive and ignore. they require regular attention like all old high performance cars

About a dollar a mile in maintenance costs. If you don't drive it at all the maintenance costs go down considerably.

From what i've been told, parts are INSANE.

Like $1200.00 for a rebuilt water pump insane.

from what ive researched, if you dont drive it "at all", you have the same, or worse, problems we have with 911's from sitting.... i think its even more important to find a balance of use with ferrari to keep things working and fresh and yet not over doing it.

regardless, the REQUIRED major service is NOT dependent upon miles necessarily, its dictated by years...which I believe is 5 for the belt and related parts service and with a 348, that major could cost between $6000 and $10,000 ever 5 years depending on "while your in there" stuff. you cant skip this because its an interference engine.....this is ...in addition to regular maintenance and fixes of broken stuff

so. compared to a 911. the cost is insanely high... not to mention an engine rebuild on a 348 is a heck of lot more than an a 911

the most concerning problem to me, assuming i could afford even a GT4, is - finding a mechanic.

if you thought finding a mechanic who knows 911's was tough, try finding one that works on older ferrari's. even the dealers employ mostly ferrari mechanics who are trained to fix the newer models that the dealer sells

so, do you have a large garage, tools, knowledge, a lift, the interest to fix em?

of course if you live near a vintage (not that 348's are all that old) ferrari mechanic and have enough $$...its not such a big deal but it needs to be considered.

i love the 348. i often see a white coupe that is just perfect. looks like a mini-testarosa

I've driven a 348 and didn't find it to be at all faster than my 993. It was pretty and it sounded cool. But I'd rather just drive other people's Ferraris than own one myself. There was a thread on ferrarichat a few years ago by a guy who DIY'ed everything on his 348. It was very impressive, but still expensive. I think the 348 is not a good bang for the maint. buck. Lots of other Ferraris I'd rather have if I was gonna have to deal with that kind of cost and headache. You know the old saying - if you want to drive a Ferrari, buy two of them because one will always be in the shop.
