Yup.

And if you feel guilt, then you have remorse, and if you have remorse then you know the difference between right and wrong.

And if you know that, chances are you have a soul.

My philosophy is based on something Kirk said to Picard. As he was dying, he looked up at Picard and asked, "Did we make a difference?"

When I am dead, I want my eulogist to think about that.

It simply is not possible for one human to make any real difference in the universe.

Completely, totally impossible.

Our footprint in the universe is unimaginably tiny.

Emphasis on unimaginably added by me.

We are not even capable of grasping just how utterly insignificant we really are. Even the entire history of humanity, even should it survive for another billion years will be a totally insignificant non-event in the history of the universe.

We truly do not matter at all on a cosmic scale. Trekkor's delusions of grandeur notwithstanding.

trekkor 08-04-2008 03:06 PM

I have no delusions.

KT

m21sniper 08-04-2008 03:07 PM

Everyone of us could die tommorow, all of us, and in the grand scheme of things it wouldn't matter not one whit or iota.

What the hell does the universe care? It doesn't.

trekkor 08-04-2008 03:10 PM

I'm sorry you have such a bleak outlook for the future.

No matter what you think of the 'rest of the universe'.

We matter.

KT

BlueSkyJaunte 08-04-2008 03:16 PM

I see the insignificant have spoken.

JavaBrewer 08-04-2008 03:21 PM

We matter to those who know us and are affected by us. Otherwise... pretty egotistical to think us humans, being as physically and mentally challenged as we all demonstrate, are all that and a bag of chips measured against the universe...

You just keep thinking that as our sun consumes its fuel, turns into a red dwarf, and every living thing on earth dies. Or some meteor or comet falls from the skies and wipes us all out in a flash.

Or fast forward a few thousand billion more years as the entire universe collapses back in on itself and all life EVERYWHERE is totally annihilated in the creation of a new singularity. Or even worse, if the universe endlessly expands until the stars all blink out, one by one, leaving a massive dark empty expanse of lifeless nothing.

Our future is 1000000000000x more "bleak" than most care to realize. All life in this universe is going to die, we are all doomed, nothing we do will ever change that fact.

Our own doom is simply inescapable. It is therefore impossible for us to 'matter' in any way. I lead a good life, but it's really because i don't want to go to prison. Not because i care about some afterlife or some fantastical concept such as karma. My morality is an entirely practical consideration.

Many folks can't deal with that simple concept. So the invisible buddy was invented and suddenly if we do what the buddy says then we're not "really" going to die. For the a simple person whose life is spent toiling in the dirt, or serving others, life now has meaning. Go on to a better place - as long as you do XYZ with a smile. Peace and power is restored.

So he's got the answers? Yeah... right.

You need to make up your mind.
Either someone has the answers or nobody does.

By declaring their insignificance, do they then prove their significance? Or do they simply prove that they will argue against anything, no matter what, just for the sake of being that guy that argues anything?

Yup. Stars getting blowed-up (supernovae) have been directly observed with the remnants relatively easy to observe by telescope and imagery. The life cycles of various types of stars are widely known by reasonably minded folks.

Of course, lots of nefarious things can happen to those photons on their way to fallible human eyes. No one has actually witnessed an individual star's birth and directly observed that same star through its life, all the way to a supernova event, so it must be all guesses.

Do you have evidence contrary or do you reject it because it doesn't float your boat?

Agreed. Wonder how many of us here would actually understand what his knowledge base is based on, ie the math, physics, chem etc. Sure as hell know I'd be lost in the first 10 words, lol.

m21sniper 08-05-2008 01:25 AM

I bow in humble unworthiness to the mighty MC Hawking.

That's one smart Edited - language removed, Z-man.

trekkor 08-05-2008 06:42 AM

So it sounds as if you think the 'superminds' cannot get their points accross to the 'lowly common folk'?

And yes, most of what people 'believe' is based on guesses ( presented as fact until a better guess comes along )

Nothing has changed here.

This article has your name written all over it...

Like these people, you are a delusional anomaly in today's world. It actually pains me to be harsh as I am sure that you are a good person, but you need an intervention. Seriously.

Is he insignificant too? You seem to have zero faith in Humans, but lots of faith in him. Why? Didn't he basically get a good PR campaign going himself, and that's the only reason that you even know his name, much less anything else about him?

Seems that he's as much of a false prophet as anyone else, and probably not deserving of your unusual adoration.

I clicked on the link and saw a reference to 'flat earth' and closed it.
Not worth my time, sir.

You don't know me ( 1 )
You put faith in man ( 2 )
Man's record always ends in failure ( 3 )

May I also add, regarding knowledge of the universe, life, meaning of life, purpose for the earth and mankind, you have taken a position that I must be wrong.

However, I do not see you presenting any alternatives except 'We don't know', 'We can't know', 'We're insignificant in the universe', etc...

Or.. Sun goes out, blows up, universe collaspes...

Yes, you don't believe a creator exists. I get that.
Belief in Almighty Jehovah does not equal delusion.
