Professional Liability Insurance?

In need to get an 'error and omission' policy, rather quickly I might add. I had a tech writing gig fall into my lap over the weekend, but its a 1099 deal, and I need to bring my own insurance to the table.

Can you recommend a company or agency? Any idea what the cost is like?

I think it varies by profession, credentails, type of work, etc. At least this is based on very preliminary/general discussions with a couple of brokers and my boss (who obviously has to carry it for this business).

I've only done very preliminary exploratory research into it (I'll need it when I go on my own so I'm just starting to look now). Please keep us updated; I'd be curious to know what you find and who's good, etc. too.

Contact your homeowners insurer, some companies will sell it. When I was a consultant, E&O policies were $10K for a million. General liability is much less.

Are you a member of a professional association? They are a good place to get insurance for a given profession.

Start with the agency you use. They should be able to find a market - even if they broker it. If they are no help - ask around your industry. The price is dependant on what kind of tech you are warking on and the limits needed.

I had the same problem a year ago. I phoned local agencies and tried online sites (where I finally connected with a reasonable price). My policy is with The Hartford and the cost is half of the next best quote I received. I'm not at home now, so I can't tell you who the agent was or which online site I used. I can recommend trying as many sources as possible.
