We are told that socialism is our only hope to save the planet but apparently the Chinese didn't get the memo.

BEIJING (Reuters) - Unidentified members of the U.S. cycling squad arrived at Beijing airport wearing black respiratory masks, a U.S. Olympic committee spokesman said on Tuesday.

One woman wearing a mask which covered the nose and mouth was in what appeared to be an American team T-shirt, photographs showed. A male wore a white T-shirt with BEIJING in black letters across the chest.

"I suspect it was their choice, you would have to talk to them as to what prompted them to do this. I will say this, I am not a scientist, but in my view that was unnecessary," said Darryl Seibel, chief communications officer of the U.S. Olympic Committee.

A U.S. team official said members of the cycling squad were wearing the masks but declined further comment.

Beijing's pollution has been a cause for concern for athletes heading for the Games which begin on Friday.

I understand Nike has come out with a new line of respirators......

See that tree you're barking up? It's the wrong one. If you don't know the fundamental differences (CRITICAL differences!) between communism and socialism, then you shouldn't be using those words. Stick with the 15 or so words that you do understand, and keep only reposting things that other people create...their words, their pictures, their ideas...you work best that way.

Back on topic- Beijing you do need a respirator even being a civillian there, it's a dump. Last year, when I went people were coming down with coughs and whatnot just 3 days in. Smog was so bad every day looked like morning fog- except it was mid 70's outside.

I would hate to see what it's like as a athlete going to air like that - they are not exaggerating.

Yes, but, to be fair, I had some friends just return from Beijing and they said breathing problems weren't as noticeable as the burning in the eyes? --yikes.

Communism is a philosophical ideal, Socialism is a political ideal. Neither actually exists, but they come from two very different backgrounds, and define two very different things. No one lived by a philosophy, and no one debates political designs. I don't understand how anyone could possibly think that Communism and Socialism are the same, but I guess some people do. Pazuzu that's not quite right; communism is actually considered a branch of socialism and is a socioeconomic method that advances the socialistic ideal. Although they have different origins, confusing one with the other is understandable and probably quite common. From Wiki:
