Holy Cow! Brett Favre has been traded to The Jets

It's on ESPN right now. Jeez, there goes an institution.

I understand that he is going to be Namath's backup.

I wonder how long before he changes back his mind.
What a[nother] sad end to a great ( + or - ) athlete.

He should have just stayed retired in the first place.

In other news, Ditka, Wanstedt, and Jauron have all asked to be reinstated as Bears head coach...

I think what we are seeing is that as pro athletes get paid more and get more media attention, they are becoming more and more like Hollywood celebrities.

And one thing that happens to Hollywood celebrities is they each attract an army of sycophants who push out their real friends and tell them they can do no wrong. Over time, they start to believe the lies and believe they really can do anything--and it's about at that time that their career tanks as they start putting out total tripe. As exhibit A, I give you Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, and Billy Corgan.

Michael Jordon was perhaps the first pro athlete to experience this phenomena. Heck, remember Michael Jordan cologne? Who wants to smell like sweaty pro basketball player?

So Favre is probably surrounded by brown nosers telling him he can still win the Superbowl. That, coupled with him sincerly missing the game probably pushed him to make this stupid choice. IMO, he would have been worth more to sponsors as a recently-retired greatest QB of all time, instead of as a joke watching his career slide away from him.

Oof...doesn't he remember the last time he faced the Pats (the drubbing back in 06)? At least he knew his team's playbook then.

I think it's a good short term move for the Jets though...CPs time was up there (if he doesn't get an offer to start in KC, Balt, or Chicago, I wouldn't be shocked to see the Pats sign him as a backup).

Week 2 will be interesting!

Great post, Chris. Favre was searching for some one to adore him, and he found that in the NY Jets' managament.

Had he stayed retired, for the next five years, he would have been the reigning king of Green Bay. After that, because there would some distance from the stinging losses he caused the fans of so many other teams, he would have been a sort of ambassador to the NFL--the ex-player that everyone loves and looks upon fondly.

I'm a Bears fan. For the better part of two decades, I've hated Brett Favre with a burning passion. It's only been in the last year or two I have had to admit that he is: 1) a class act, and 2) probably the greatest QB of all time.

His recent moves in the past two weeks have called both of those thing into question.

On the other hand, I can understand how when you spend 17 years doing something and being the best of the best, how it can be hard to walk away.

The whole Favre clan are needy attention whores. Just watch them over the next year (or possibly two). Scott, Deanna and Bonita Favre, friend Al Jones, and agent "short" Bus Cook will be flapping their gums whenever the love for Favre is not there...which should be the first game Favre throw three or four picks. Probably against the Pats. Stay tuned.

Favre will be lucky to have more TDs than INTs this season.

Favre is and always was a monster sized douche, but he may do well with the Jets. Cotchery and Coles can catch the ball and they have a couple good TEs. All those guys are geeked right now.
