i need FISHING advice...rod/reel

thanks in advance. i dont have time to check out reviews...hopefully the PPOT guys can help.

i am going to southeast asia in a few months. last time i was there, i saw lots of fishing opps. i want to be somewhat prepared this time. any good telescoping rods out there? i figure my ultralight spinning reel will work. i want a fantastic rod that can break down or crunch (telescope) down to fit into my backpack. hopefully, an economical one, since i will not use it that much.

If you are going ultralight, I've got a 4' Ugly Stick spinning rod. Works great, comes to 2 pieces, 2ft each. Came with a micro sized spinning reel, meant to be used with the braided lines.

I just checked the bass pro shops website, tehy have a few telescoping or multi-piece take-down rods.

Walmart sells a couple telescopics made by Shakespeare. I have one and never had a problem with the pole. The real on the other hand has less than average drag control. But still, never had a problem.
Oh, and it costs about 19.99

With all the weird restrictions, could you carry a fishing pole onto an airplane? Hooks are pointy after all.

I have a friend who has this setup from Cabelas. He really likes it and it's reasonable ($60). They also have 5 piece flyrods if you want to go that direction.

wow. one bonus about the $20 unit; i could donate it to a local, and not have to pack it back.

you know, "teach a man to fish...stuff".

I would maybe take a favorite reel and end tackel but if you are going to Asia why not buy a rod there? They are probably all made where you are going, it can't cost more and if you don't want it just leave it. No packing.

i am going to be in some remote villages... i am going "old school". i have been working my squatting muscles, if you get my drift. all my rods are GLoomis. no way i pack them. beside they are all one-piece.

i bet some of those dumb fish have never seen a lure... i am going to slay them.

I used to use some real small Yo-zuri s. 2-4lb test and a light rod with your reel. I used a two piece and it isn't very long so you could pack it in a small tube. You have to be flying into a major city, they have to sell these things.
I don't think you can beat live bait and of course the locals know what the fish like the best. Lures are always a good thing to fall back on.

Make sure you don't have to cast far. I was in the boonies with some friends who brought 4' telescoping rods and none of them could get their bait to the fish because they couldn't toss it beyond 15 yards. I would just get a regular 6" pole that breaks down in 2 and take that along. That works for my hikes.

I used an ice fishing pole on a river in Colorado once--kinda fun actually.
