There's never a good time for a devastating earthquake but dang it's like the gods are mad at Haiti. Who's in any condition to help those people now? This with all of it's intendant problems on top of Covid? Sacred feces they are in for a very bad go of it.

Continuous rule by corrupt officials for the entire existence of the country, and built in a haphazard uncontrolled manner on the side of of a volcano is not a good thing.

The other side of the island is the Dominican republic. One must assume they experienced the same earthquake and storms. Yet no mention of them in the news.

Pretty familiar with the place and some of the issues. Way more complicated than blaming the USA, that is the standard (and in my humbled and informed opinion) incorrect fall back comment for US apologists.

Many can be blamed for the conditions in Haiti starting with the French back when it was a slave colony known as Saint-Domingue, the Spaniards, their neighbors to their immediate east, the USA, the Canadians, most recently the Chileans, the Clinton Foundation and more importantly, the ruling class. Hispaniola is a beautiful island.

I was personally involved in a project to help, no matter what we tried, old habits die hard. In the end all investment lost, local contact murdered, our teacher murdered, immature plants, fencing, furniture, clothing all burned as fuel.

Over population, lack of understanding of basics of agriculture, resistance to learning, lack of education. The constant 10% fee charged by the government for money sent from hard working Haitians that have left in search of opportunities.

When "we" were trying to teach basic agricultural methods, erosion control, hygiene as a means to improve on the extreme conditions, our people would repeat a typical saying in Haiti, "pouw chape povrete ou dwe kite Ayiti" (to escape poverty you must leave Haiti).

Haiti a French slave colony. Huge influx of Africans to work the sugar and coffee plantations. Economic oppression by the French. Less than 50% can read and write. Duvalier who reportedly encouraged slavery of Haitians to work in Dominican plantations.

Dominican Republic "another" Spanish colony. Spain allowed the colonizers to run the place. Over 90% can read and write. Trujillo... Some might have not heard of "el generalisimo". Ruthless man that pushed for education, infrastructure and (believe it or not) his moves to lighten the color of their skin.
