get a bike with a sidecar. problem solved.

2-up means planning your trailing throttle and deceleration much more carefully. You will be amazed at how "under-braked" and top-heavy your bike feels with another 100# (I'm being generous) up top.

Picking my bike up tomorrow afternoon. Present to myself for getting my degree. I have ridden since I was about 10 (33 now) but have not had a bike for the past 2 years. Wife said she wants to go for a ride w/ me this weekend. Told her that’s not going to happen. She has never been on a motorcycle and no haven ridden for the past 2 years I am not comfortable with her on the back. I have signed her up for the MSF course and she will be going in September. If she comes away from the course really wanting a bike, that is going to be her Christmas present. Problem solved. Even when I rode every day, I never liked having anyone on the back.

She won't lean the right way at the right time, end of story. Hopefully that's the only thing that will end!!

Not sure what all the fuss is about.....I never had a problem. If shes a big girl she can decide for herself.

When I first started riding i had a crazy friend hop on the back and we went around the block a few times. He did everything a pax is not supposed to do and it took a while to get used to it.. but its not rocket science. (now finishing a lap 2 up on a klr650 at a motocross park... thats rocket science)

" she wont lean the right way"?
You and your pax shouldn't be leaning at all... lean the bike with the bars( counter-steering) and stay centralized on it?

I would get 6 months hard riding exp.
Try it with a fellow rider first.(nothing ladys like more then two men on bike)
Pick a time when there is little traffic.
Pick a location thats medium speed and wont require alot of starts and stops.
Find a road that has alot of easy long sweepers so she can get used to the bike tipping over.

tell her: "Dont try to lean... don't do anything but squeeze me tight and keep your body aligned with mine. you should feel like a 100lb backpack." If she can ride a bike she wont have any problems.

Good advice, my comment about leaning was based on the passenger not staying in line with the bike but being more upright, leaning toward the outside of the turn. Your clarification is a good point.

My wife never felt comfortable on the BMW GS, it was just too high. It was a lighter bike, and with a very high center of gravity. So she didn't ride much at all.

Like Jeff said, on the HD, her extra wieght is barely noticable. We have gone on some long rides, and we both always gear up. My riding style is the same with her on or off.

I had been riding for a long time though...

The guy who taught me to ride hopped on as a pax after the first week. He did everything a pax is NOT supposed to do. Leaned the wrong way, lounged way back to make the front end light, clunked his helmet into mine a few times...etc. I hated him for it at the time but now appreciate the lesson it taught me.

Riding 2-up SUCKS unless your pax knows what they're doing.

On the other hand, if it's a hot chick who decides the best way to hold on is to grab your thighs, it ain't so bad.

Damn you would think that if you had someone on the back you might as well plan on crashing. My first cycle was a Honda 125 and I took passengers on it all the time. I've rode passengers on every bike I have ever had. Just give them a few simple instructions, like when to get on and off the bike, don't lean either way, and hang onto something and you should not have a problem. Even if they do something stupid like lean into, or the opposite way, a turn nothing serious is going to happen if you know how to anticipate and react to such things.

two things. i hate it when i see a girl riding on the back without safety gear. doubly irk-some when i see the lady wearing a hand me down helmet. no visor, beat down, doesnt fit.

if you let her be a passenger, buy her a helmet or get her to buy her own. jacket, gloves, i bought for my GF.

second. there is a skill to be a passenger. besides just sitting still, she needs to flow with your movements. if your movements suck...i mean.. are not yet perfected, then you dont want her back there. i had a friend that rode a bike. i once gave her a ride, and i never knew she was back there. it was great. she didnt even need to hang on...she did tho.

Rule of thumb is to have her keep her spine in the same vertical plane as the bike at all times.

I thought we were talking about bikes, not planes?

This is confusing...math is hard!
