You know, I love the way they work on those old F1 cars out in the open, seemingly in the middle of a muddy field. It does make them look low-tech and simple. I have to say that the looks are probably deceptive. Those late 60's / early 70's F1 cars, alot of them with their DFV engines, used mechanical fuel injection which needed a whole range of different mechanical parts to swap around adjust how they behaved for optimum performance. With a modern car you just hook up a computer and select a different map. There are a lot of things that were far more complicated on those old cars than you would think.
I was thinking about this thread driving home this evening and the comment about it being Colin Chapmans fault (which I thought was funny). In some ways though this might be true as by painting his cars in a corporate color scheme and bringing sponsorship onto the scene, he started to turn racing into much more of a profit making business with serious amounts of money at stake. Before that it was very much a manufactures battle with little more than bragging rights as the prize. What do you think? |
There was a push to shore up poor market performance by AMC in the late 60's thru the late 70's and one effort was the Penske F 5000 and Bobby Allsion NASCAR (also Penske) Matador and another was Warner Hodgen and Mike Curb taking a stock block AMC Turbo to Indy. One of these involved some hanky panky in the City of Industry with the tax payers footing the bill.

Wow!! I'm not sure how I'd missed this thread to this point. I love the old cars even though they were before me (DoB 1970). The new ones are amazing, but they are no where near as sexy or visceral as the early cars. Some great photos here. I occassionaly lurk on the vintage portion of atlasf1.com. I'll have to check out the ferrarichat thread. Keep it up guys.

WOWOWO man that 917 at the Glen photo is wicked awsome.

Vern, those are some great photos! Please keep posting more. I was at a lot of those same races and I'm really enjoying your collection. SmileWavy

I hope this thread has not gone too far off track; I mean the original poster talked about Indy and Formula cars. He did mention some of the CanAm and TransAm drivers though, so I'll keep looking. These are slides stored in boxes and might otherwise never have been seen again. Keeps me out of other kinds of trouble, too.

This thread brought back a lot of memories. The first race I ever attended was the inaugural California 500 at Ontario Motor Speedway. It was the first of many.
The date was September 6, 1970, Labor Day weekend...our seats were in turn 4 where A. J. Foyt hit the wall. I kept the poster I bought:cool: Sorry for lame phone pic. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1219853777.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1219853802.jpg Pic of AJ after the wreck (I did not take it). http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1219853826.jpg |
Doh, of course it's a Mirage, it says that right on the side. Maybe I should back off to my "no specifics" postings, or put away the wine.
However, I KNOW this was at the Airport in Reading, PA http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1219899852.jpg At the Glen http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1219899947.jpg Pretty sure this is Jo Bonnier in the CanAm McLaren http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1219899974.jpg And Mr. McLaren himself http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1219900537.jpg |

Just want to chime in that I am also enjoying your posts and pictures Vern, please keep them coming.
Reminds me of the days at Riverside, wish I had gone there more. And now for something completely different: :D http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1220041354.jpg |
Scott, that's actually a pretty old car. I think it's the 2006 model. Can't see the helmet to see who is driving though.
|
Funny, I noticed it didn't have the ugly dorsal fin like many of the new cars... it was just one of the few F1 cars I had on my hard drive.

Bahahahahahahaha!
A French Ferrari with seahorses on the crest? Super rare citroen only model. I head Enzo secretly had an affair with a frenchy. Maybe an heir to Citroen? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1220043029.jpg |
I just found this, there's a whole slew of videos from the 60's that appear to be from someone's personal stash.

Awesome photos Vern!

Watkins Glen. Early 70's. Camped on the back straight near where the chicane is now. Mark Donahue in his 12 cylinder Porsche there and gone before you even saw second place car - first lap. Those were the days. Today everything is comparatively vanilla. COTA etc. Colin Chapman, Ken Tyrrell. Roger Penske, Bruce McLaren, Ferrari, Hall Chaparral.....and more. Those were the glory days. It's just business now.
Kevin Buckler is one of the few who actually puts his heart into the sport today. He has 5 cars at Daytona again! |

Boy, excellent thread! Had not seen it when it started but love the old cars.
I for one miss the day when drivers actually shifted the gearbox and did not have computers controlling everything. |
Yeah, this thread turned out OK. No politics, no carping at each other.
Joe, go back to the first page. There's a link to a thread on Ferrari Chat. I hope it's still good. |
