Question Career Development - Do you kiss _$$

So an executive search firm gives you the speech:

1. You are smart.
2. You are intelligent.
3. You are perfection.
4. You are presentable......etc., etc., etc.

The above don't mean a lot as your single minus is that:

"5. You do not know how to kiss _$$."

Bottom Line: "To become super-successful, you need to be 90% successful at #5, and 2.5% on 1-4."

So, are you guys pretty good at #5. I mean, with me, I just can't seem to turn into a plastic.

Do you kiss at work?

I have a franchised restaurant, and I am always stepping on toes.

I get it honestly. My mother has been asked to leave meetings before.

No. Which might be why I'm not going anywhere (not that I want to). But at least I get to laugh at the guys who do BN and aren't going anywhere either!

I recently left a job at a relatively fast growing company. I found that when I started working there, the "small company" atmosphere prevailled, and brown-noseing was of limited use. As the company grew, it turned into more of a corporate atmosphere, where brown-noseing was rampant. Needless to say, I'm much happier now!

I have seen a company destroy itself from the inside out and hundreds of people who lost jobs due to nothing more than corporate brown nosing. The world is already to full of yes-men what we need are people who can stand up for what is right and tell the truth once in a while.

I work at a facility populated almost entirely by engineers and scientists. Brown-nosing is too closely linked to a social skill and we all know that engineers and scientists have no social skills.

To be honest, in my world, performance is nearly everything and kissing a$$ is worthless if you can't perform so it's not really done.

That's pretty much my job, thank goodness. I'm decent at getting along with people, but not terribly social. Fortunately I'm pretty good at what I do.

The other thing one must learn is how to kill with a smile on your face....the worst thing is to let the other guy know it is coming. You want it to be a surprise ending.

Remember Corporate Exec's are not there to help the company but themselves.

The question is why weren't U one of those being brown nosed. Being there early meant you should have risen to the top as the comapny grew.

One thing I have learned in life that 1 of 1,000 good people make it up, but tons of a$$h*9# seem to pop through because they do not care who they hurt, who looses their job.

Don't get me wrong, leadership is tough, but there are options to immoral behavior.

My dad taught me to be my own man, stand up for what you believe, but "THIS" is not acceptable in American business; not by a mile.

My company use terms "executive maturity" and "teaming together" as motivators.

Not so bad, if you can hang in there, you can make a decent living. Only issue there is absolutely no security so make as much as you can.

"Exec Maturity" means learn how to take it up the A$$ and like it.

"Teaming Together" means never make a decison, especially on your own.

No, but sometimes I think I should.

I do make it a habit to be friendly to my boss, but that is more of a common courtesy thing.

When I started on my current project (back in 2002), I switched bosses to get in on the action. I was assigned to a team led by one of my manager's favorites. I did not get along with her. I was new to the software, new to the platform, and new to the methodology (and everyone knew this when I was selected for the team). She liked to give me three word orders and got mad when I asked questions. She got mad when I reported back to her--as I often did not understand what she wanted me to do. Needless to say, I had friction with my new manager. About two year into the project, the team lead left. Suddenly I was the golden boy who could do no wrong. The truth is, I didn't do much of anything different, I just got along with the new team lead better.

That team lead left back in December. The new team lead has been on the team nearly as long as me. Her problem is that she doesn't like to delegate--she likes to do all of the work herself. There are parts of the project that I should know about that I don't, and her unwillingness to allow others to do work she has claimed for herself is really slowing me down as she has claimed far more than she can actually do. I'm busy but often waiting on her. She is super busy. We have three other team members that do very little.

One quote I use that is great and refers to most directors and above (and trust me I recognize that there are some good ones, it has been a few years since I ran into one)..

Companies always ask eveyone to be flexible and welcome change.

Here you go: "Indecision is the key to flexibility."

I have found that most mgrs refuse to make decisions. Either because they don't think it important to make a decision, making a decision will force action, or action can result in a change that can produce better or worst results.

By the way, I got the quote from a towlette at Hooters. (no lie)

Tabs,

No idea what you do for a living, or if you have any actual experience working for a Fortune 500 company. However, it's easy to be glib. In my personal experience working for a prominent Forture 50 bluechip, my experience doesn't support what you suggest.

Exec maturity also means if you see a fellow director doing something wrong or hurtful to the company, you should not say anything because that would be disruptive. PLEASE...

My director is such a kiss ass, that he cannot make any decisions without getting a full concensus. He calls everyone in the company to ask what he should do, and then he quotes he is doing stuff that is the opinion of most leaders.
He has made some huge mistakes, because he does not use his experience and judgement. Sadly he is a nice guy, but leaves his ba++s at home when he comes to the office..
