Help with home theater - upgrading from 5.1 to 7.1

The dreaded day has come... my home theater receiver has begun to make loud popping noises so I guess it is time to replace it. I notice all the new receivers are 7.1... is that going to mess with my 5 speaker + sub woofer setup? Looking at getting the Onkyo TX-SR805 Thanks in advance.

No. Most 7.1 setups will allow for 5.1 setups. Besides, audio on DVDs and broadcast via satellite and cable is 5.1 anyway.

And if you don't use them for 7.1, many receivers allow you to separate those 2 extra channels for speakers in another zone if that is important. Ian

There should be a setup screen to program the receiver for 5.1 so that no information is lost to the channels not being used. It might even auto-detect. Then it should sound just as you had it set up prior.

Skip the Onkyo TX-SR805... did a search on them and they randomly burst into flames. Switched to Pioneer VSX01THX

I use a 7.1 receiver to run my 5.1 setup and use the "C" speakers in the kitchen.

I did a home theatre in my house about a year ago. Most advice on the net says to focus on a really good 5.1 system rather than get lower quality speakers and a 7.1. Unless you have a really big room the 7.1 will not sound any different than a 5.1. Plus, assuming you have a budget in mind, $2000 spent on a 5.1 will sound better than $2000 spent on a 7.1 since you will get better quality speakers. Oh, and the 7.1 receivers will do 5.1 just fine.

Do they still sell 5.1? Everything I see for sale on the internet is 7.1

I bought a Denon receiver and am very happy with it. It does 5.1 and HDMI passthrough, does all I need it too. I think I paid around $400 for it.

I bid on the Pioneer on evilbay... list is $900, best price I saw in online stores was $750 and they (EB) have a NIB one for $625 with shipping. Sucks because the Onkyo had all the specs. I wanted... High current power supply, burr brown optos... except for that going up in smoke thing. The Pioneer should be OK, not the best but OK, I would drop thousands on sound equipment if I could. I'm sure it will be a step up from the JVC I have now (which has very good specs too).

You should be able to do better than $625 shipped, or find something a bit better in that price range. Might want to check audiogon and CL too. | ||
