Had a Pelican land on my roost today

Cgarr, flew in today for a visit in his very cool WW1 replica. The thing is very realistic looking and even has a propane fired fake gun on top that really makes some nice noise.

Craig, after fighting those headwinds on the way down to Ohio, I hope the tailwind made your return trip short and sweet. I will have to make it up that way some time for a visit in the Pacer.

Thanks for stopping by! (my daughters really liked the airplane...reminded them of the Flyboys movie they watched a while back)

(note: Craig in the background telling his wife on the phone that he actually was able to find our runway amongst the sea of identical looking Ohio farmland )

Yeah, he cheated, but it is a tough runway to pick out at this time of year and my data was not in his GPS data base so he had to manually enter it.

Very cool!! I'll be down in Findlay, helping Tab move into his new shop next Sunday. I wish I could have been at your place to see Craig's plane and to meet you guys!

Cool!

My grand father was member of the Flying Farmers. He lived near Jackson, MI and we would fly all over southern Michigan and sometimes down into Indiana/Ohio in his J-3 Cub. I always loved landing on a runway that was really just a mowed section of someones field.

My wife's first husband's grandfather (long story) was a long time member also and they hosted many meetings over the years here (his runway intersected ours, but got plowed up a couple years ago as "grandpa" died). You very well may have been at our strip southwest of Toledo Ohio.......small world!

What a great country!! Where else can one guy say to another, "hey, why don't you fly your hand-built airplane over on Saturday and land in my yard!". Fantastic!

What kind of cash flow does a hobby like that require? Rough initial cost of airplane? Lessons? Maintenance?

Great stuff...downright inspiring!!

Aircraft are quite expensive, but you can find used planes for less than $30,000 used. Maintenance is brutal. A friend of mind had a little Cessna 152 that he shared with 2 friends. The rebuild cost on the engine was close to $19,000! It is not a cheap hobby....

A less expensive way to get involved is to join a flying club. These vary greatly in size and equipment, but basically you will have a group of folks who share one or more aircraft, thus distributing the costs.

I'll bet that makes for some interesting nighttime landings. If thats even possible, I couldn't imagine trying to do a visual at night in NWO.....lots of places look the same.

A roll of TP in a can with kerosene helps to show the way at night...until some blow or burn out and you are landing ......cross runway heading for the corn.

Tim Has the ultimate place there, Planes, Cars, Bikes, Workshop and his own runway! I was shot last night, got home and took a nap! I did have a good tail wind going home, I was averaging about 90 across the ground but the wind and sun just took its toll on the ole boy. Down and back was 3.5 hours. I will shoot back this Fall, what a great place,

We used to have radio activated lights on the old north/south runway and I have considered installing them on our East/West runway, but I don't really like flying single engine airplanes at night. I can and do on occasion fly off my strip at night, but it can be a bit nerve racking. We have a light on a building on the west end, so landings are always from the west.

Yep, NW Ohio is mainly open farm ground.... Southern Ohio is more wooded as is northern Michigan. Great for flying however because if one ever loses and engine requiring an off airport landing, chances are good you can find an open area to somewhat safely set it down in.

Sure the terrain is mundane compared to other parts of the country, but the Great Lakes are close as well as snowskiing in Michigan. Living in the farm country suits my lifestyle nicely as we can do what we want on our property without b!tching neighbors. My "perfect vacation" is a week or two out in my shop playing with cars/airplanes/motorcycles/etc
