Not that it may have mattered in this example, but I have to continously remind my employee that "hanging out" in the fast lane isn't a good idea. He sticks to the fast lane when driving on the freeway saying it's the fastest route between two points. I tell him that's the fastest route to dead. The driver(s) in the fast lane are the first to get it when someone/thing (loose wheel) jumps the center divider. Additionally, a wrong-way driver, thinking they are in the "slow" lane, will be in the fast lane.

They should give tickets for hanging in the fast lane ( unless you're speeding of course then that's' ok IMHO)

Wow, really. Here in Houston we usually have 3-5 lanes, and the left is often the most congested. I can often go faster with less congestion in the far right lane as backwards as that is. I can only assume that everyone thinks "I'm going fast, I'll go to the left".

If I can, I stay in the middle lane, but I generally move to the most open lane. I also don't like to drive beside other cars if there is room for me to be ahead or behind them. If someone swerves in either direction, I don't want to be there.

No single lane is the right one for accident avoidance, accidents happen in all lanes, cross multiple lanes, in some cases left hanging is best, some , right hanging is best, some zigzaggin like the USS Indianapolis, before it stopped the zigging, or zagging is best...

The only theory that helps,
is looking ahead and around you
Along with being awake and having the experience to deal with things you see

And it still won't fix yer car-ma when that truck narrows down your options to
"crashing head on with the acid/chemicals load tanker truck"
or
"taking it in to the armco to the side, pirouetting 5 times and landing it in the concrete bridge support "

I try never to relax on the beltway in DC...not that the poor souls on the video were not vigilant.

I always look for space. That may not make a difference, but it keeps me looking.

The POV vehicle in this clip was travelling way too fast for surrounding conditions. Just because you have a clear lane ahead of you doesn't mean "let 'er rip". You have to take the rest of the traffic into consideration. Had they been driving slower, they would have had time to react instead of joining the "dogpile". (Notice all the vehicles to their right with brake lights activated.)

Large trucks are incredibly dangerous.

The drivers are poorly regulated and the vehicles are often not up to the legal safety requirements (which are low anyway).

As we get more Mexican trucks and drivers, things are going to get a LOT worse.

IT is a very high pollution way to move goods around the country too. I'm fine with moving groceries or J.I.T freight but I often see huge wire rolls and beams being moved - a lot of that should go by train.

I hope we see some tighter regulation and inspection on these damn things soon.

I say all that from the point of view of having a fatehr who worked for a trucking company. You would not believe the stuff I saw as a kid.

Our brilliant DOT is getting ready to let Mexican trucks into the US on an unlimited basis. No random drug testing like we do here, no annual vehicle inspection and certification. Nothing!
