Record Catfish on Barbie Rod and Reel

It's not the arrow, it's the Indian.

I've caught some big catfish on light tackle and it can take a while to land a big fish, so I wonder if the reporter and/or writer got the story wrong with the quote below of "seconds later". Or is there something fishy?

ELKIN, N.C.

David Hayes' granddaughter just ask him to hold her Barbie rod and reel while she went to the bathroom. He did. And seconds later he landed the state record channel catfish at 21 pounds, 1 ounce.

Alyssa's father had bought the pink Barbie fishing rod for Christmas and she had caught a few bluegill before her grandfather hauled in the catfish.

The Winston-Salem Journal reported the catch Aug. 5 in eastern Wilkes County has been certified as a record by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.

Hayes and his granddaughter have been fishing in the pond behind his house since she was big enough to hold a pole.

Hayes said his granddaughter worried he would break her rod. He landed the 21-pound fish on a 6-pound test line. It was 32 inches long, 2 inches longer than the rod.

I caught a 12 lb. catfish on 5lb. test, it took over 30 minutes to bring him in. The writer must have meant 'hooked' not 'landed'.

Hmm can't find any report of it on the Journal's site, but then again the big story here is a high school football player who died after taking a bad hit on friday night.

I watched my best friend's dad catch a 42" long Muskie on 6 lb test line once. It didn't really take that long - maybe a minute or so. That was the meanest fish I've ever seen.

I sent a link to that story to a bud in NC last week... he doesn't believe it.

Yeah, it is all over the net. From my limited experience I say BS. NC
mountain people love to tell a lie. You ever caught a medium to largish
catfish? I have - using a full size top quality freshwater Garcia rod and
closed face reel. I could not get the catfish reeled into the little 10 foot
aluminum boat. We motored over to where the fish had wrapped himself around
a stump or two and untangled the line. That rod and reel still wouldn't land
him, but it did get him close enough to the boat to slide a boat paddle
under him. We motored back to the pond boat landing area with that catfish
riding on the paddle using the Minn-Kota electric motor with the hook and
line still in his mouth or gullet. I would have bet money that catfish
weighed 25 pounds or more, he was almost as long as the boat paddle. Huge.
He weighed 7.5 lbs. And I wasn't fishing for cats, was trying to catch some
crappie with live minnows and they weren't rigged to sink to the bottom
either. That is a good crappie pond. I always use 6 pound test line so
casting light weight lures pretty far is possible.

They did manage to get a verified, record fish, according to the story.

Then, why take an already spectacular event and "make up" the Barbie rod/reel part?

I'm leaning towards believing the story . . .

I think the "Hogzilla" folks mussed things up for honest sportsmen and fishergirls.

If they would've caught bigfoot in a 'Barbie Bear Trap', that would have been something else...

How pathetic does Ken look right about now?

Barbie's got the nice car, the nice boat, the huge rack, and the fishing gear.

He has no package!

Funny thought,

My buddy who is a fishing fanatic told me that is you catch a record fish, get it photographed and verified, typically the manufacture of the rod and reel will provide you with a boat load of their product (pun intended).

Therefore this guy probably has a lifetime supply of Barbie fishing equipment!
