Omaha Steaks-Good or Bad?
From a coupon in the mail. I ordered this today. Normally about $200 which is ridiculous.
Item Qty Each Total 07819 American Celebration 1 $59.99 $59.99 (1 pkg.) Top Sirloin Steaks 4/5 Oz (1 pkg.) Boneless Pork Chop 4/4 Oz (1 pkg.) Stfd Sole W/sclp&crab 2/4.5 (1 pkg.) Gourmet Franks 8/3 (1 pkg.) Filet Mignon 4/5 Oz (1 pkg.) Potatoes Au Gratin 10 Count (1 pkg.) Omaha Steaks Burgers 4/4 Oz 08318 6/4 Burgers, Knife Set 1 $.00 $.00 (1 pkg.) Omaha Steaks Burgers 6/4 Oz (1 pkg.) Cutlery Set W/cutting Board Shipping: $15.99 Subtotal: $75.98 Adds up to about 120 ounces of meat of various kinds or about $10/pound on average. May be a little expensive, but individually shrink wrapped, most times just me and the wifey. I suppose I could go to Costco and buy the same and shrink wrap myself. I'll see what the quality is. Oh, and I get some steak knives and a cutlery set which look OK on line, but not close to the Cutco knives that I have in my kitchen. I intend to give them to my daughter who just got her own place. ![]()

I had a friend who almost died from eating them many years ago, suppose it was an exception but the entire family of four ended up w/ food poisoning and were in the hospital for a couple of days. I haven't touched an Omaha steak since then. I know many folks who love them but I can't bring myself to test the waters. I don't like the idea of buying meat through the mail.

We keep boxes of their steaks in our freezer just for times we have unexpected guests and want to grill w/o running into town. They are handy, pretty good quality. Sometimes they run specials on their site cheaper than the coupons they mail out. The frozen meatballs are also tasty and quick to prepare with any type of pasta/sauce. We also have bought some fine filets from Allen Brothers. But we have a very good butcher that will cut what we want as well when we want "the best".

Not the best but I've liked everyone I've eaten.

I have bought them a few times. They are not bad.
Great as a gift. The convenience is what I like, individually shrink wrapped and different choices. It is a nice package deal. |

I usually get them for a Christmas gift from some business contacts every year. They are not bad, but I have had better steaks from Costco. The portions, in my opinion, are pretty small also. The Filet Mignon that I prepare for my family could be eaten by myself.

Steaks are barely average, frozen burgers are crap, wieners are hard to wreck. The potatoes are the best thing in the box.
We only eat Omaha when it comes as a gift. I will sometimes surrender a little quality for cost on some things, but never when it comes to food, wine, and women. ![]() |

I thought the title was 'Obama steaks'.
I was trying to figure out what those were. ![]() KT

Omaha Steaks? We've tried 'em...so-so is my review. I'd judge Costco meat to be superior.

After trying most of thir meat, We only buy the bacon-wrapped filet mignon (very good IMHO). They cost too much IMHO, but are often half price so we only buy when there is a big sale.

The frozen meat guys come by the shop once a year or so. Made one purchase, meat was nowhere near as good as the local grocery.

Not that good IMHO. Several grocery stores have started to market the "choice" grade meat under their own label. For instance, Tom Thumb and Randall's started selling Ranchers Reserve several years ago.
Believe it or not you will find that sometimes these cuts are better than Angus. Look for the marbling and you can not go wrong. If you run across a cut of meat marketed as Stirling Silver, I strongly recommend you buy it. I'm not sure if they carry it in your area or not, but that is what Salt Grass puts on the table in Dallas. I don't know how good the food is at Salt Grass, I've never been to one, but I see the lot is full most of the time. Winn Meat Co distributes the line. If any of you Dallas guys want to give it a try, let me know, I can get it straight from the plant.

Yeah, I saw that too. Do you think one would keep him down? I'm not so sure.

I work in Omaha a lot, its just like when I work in San Fran, I grab sourdough in one place steaks in the other. They are good, but in Denver we can get better.

I prefer to get the meat bulk and seal a meal it myself for freezing. You can put the rub on, vacuum seal it and toss it in the deep freeze. Never had a bad steak from that outfit. Better to go to a good butcher local.

Nothing you can't equal or in my opinion better at local supermarket or butcher shop for a lot less $. If you buddy up to the butcher he will pick you the best. If you REALLY buddy up he will go into the back and cut you the best.

find a butcher and call him, "friend".
i think the omaha filets are too soft. (too small too). i wonder what they do to make them "clouds" of meat.? the flavor is alright, but i miss the beefy goodness. they must do something to them.. too friggen expensive too.
