house siding repair

Hey guys anyone know how to repair a hole in vinyl siding. We got up Monday to a hole big enough to put your little finger in and no clue as to how it got there. If I can't find a replacement panel I need some ideas.

drive by any jobsite putting up the same siding you have and slide the dude a 20. take that piece and put in the back of your house and take the piece from the back to replace the punctured one.

the real question is - why did someone shoot your house?

Good question. What ever hit the house did not have enough power to dent the wood behind it.

This usually happens in the winter here in MI. When cold, the siding (if it's vinyl) gets brittle and can break easily. Easy fix... tin snips and some roofing nails are all you may need to get it done.

Just a warning, it's a PITA to splice in a piece in the middle of a wall. You have to do a lot of twisting around of the surrounding siding, so make sure you do it while the temps outside are warm. They make a special tool to help latch and unlatch the siding, it would be helpful in this case. Honestly, between matching the color, brand, and style of siding, it might be better to call a vinyl siding company and have them fix it. Otherwise you might be doing a lot of legwork to find the right stuff.

Or, you can do what everyone else does to repair vinyl siding:

You mean tear it off and replace with concrete siding?

Sorry David, but after hanging the stuff I hate it. Not to mention in KS (frequent hail) vinyl siding isn't the most durable choice. Probably not a problem in WA.

thought about bondo but its not water proof and that is a big issue here in WA. Probably will just call some one in.

Now if I could just figure out how it got there..........................

You don't have to use Bondo, per se. There are products out there made specifically for vinyl siding that are "bondo like". Check with your local big-box. Replacing the entire piece is for major damage. Repairing a small hole, as you described, is typically filled.

Cool thanks for the input. I feel a trip to the evil place of Home Depot in the works.

Bondo Siding? I don't think so.

I don't suppose you have any left over? If it's more than a few years old, it won't match anyway.

Siding tool, shaped like a hook, to unhook the top, then replace the piece. Easy if you've seen it done, hard to explain.

Probably broke by a rock flung from the lawnmower.....

That's how small holes are repaired. I've done it on both aluminum and vinyl siding. Bigger areas of damage require replacing the panel.

If you are not too concerned about appearance , how about a little blob of clear silicone sealant. It may be visible, but will not leak, and will be a quick and easy fix.
