Marietta Georgia- what's the scoop?

My wife and I currently live and work in Orlando Fl. and we're entertaining the idea of moving to Marietta Georgia. We both work for the nations largest defense contractor and have a chance of catching on with a facility in Marietta. Lot's of stuff would have to happen for a move to take place but what's the deal with Marietta? Good and bad. Housing prices? If this move takes place this may be where we retire. Our oldest son lives in Dahlonega so it would get us closer to the grandson and son So fill me in Georgiaites

One of the nicer parts of Atlanta. Traffic is a big issue in Atl. Very crowded, but over all, good quality of life.

Florida has hurricanes (bad) and Marietta isn't very far from Road Atlanta (good)!

Atlanta is a great town, and you can scout out where you buy your home near your job in or near Marietta, and can probably set yourself up for a not-so-bad commute.

Nice area, but incredible traffic (welcome to Atlanta). Great weather too. Dobbins AFB? Lockheed-Martin?

+1. My mom lives in Marietta (right off of Roswell Rd). Horrendous traffic.

You'll definitely want to live fairly close to work. Kennesaw is close to Marietta, but you'll have to buy a gun.

I75 is simply the worst highway I've ever driven on, traffic-wise. Send an email to Randy Cecale, (rcecale) he lives in that area...

If you decide to move to Marietta (Cobb County) do yourself a favor and move to "east Cobb" or east of Interstate 75. Still a Marietta address and a mile or two extra to the the base but safe, excellent schools and super neighborhoods. Downtown Marietta has the "square" with a few restaurants, antique stores and a bunch of government buildings, but Marietta, is really spread out.

The replies are helpful. I'm already a gun owner so no issue there We work for Lockheed Martin. I'm not sure I want to live in a community unless I can have an acre or so and a fairly large garage ( 3 bay ). I'm also not into home owner associations Would prefer city water and sewer but not a show stopper. Like anyone else we want privacy, close to work, acreage, cheap, hospitals near, shopping near all for $80,000.00 Living in Orlando we know traffic and having driven to our sons house we know Atlanta traffic We currently have a 7 minute drive to work which is VERY nice. We'll see how this all plays out.

Roswell road is in Fulton County. Marietta is in Cobb County.

The horrendous traffic statement is accurate, but I live near DC. It's no different here.

I miss going to Chattahoochee park after work.

I live in East Cobb and love it here. There is quite a mixture of new homes from $1M +, to the occasional old brick ranch, but East Cobb is for the most part, newer and newer styles of homes etc. as opposed to the 'old' Marietta on the other side of I-75. If your looking for land etc, youre going to have to go west out towards Dallas, or northwest up into Cherokee County or Canton area.

And Roswell Road is actually in both Fulton and Cobb counties, and the section in Cobb is a desireable place.

I go back to Atlanta in a minute if I had a good job there. Northern burbs are nice. Some of the area's better schools too.

Isn't there a 'well known' 914 shop there?

I stand corrected. I just checked. I was thinking of the part that intersected 285 and went parallel to 400. I forgot that Atlanta basically ran out of street names and reuses them over and over.

Yeah! I should have said that she lived right off of Peachtree. That could be anywhere...

The traffic is truly horrible where she lives, though. The only place that I would say is worse (that I have seen) is DC. A guy I used to work with actually FELL ASLEEP right near the 285/85 junction he had been sitting for so long without moving.

I'll be towing the 911 through there in a couple of months for the RA DE. Not looking forward to it...

Atlanta traffic may be worse than DC's traffic.

If you're looking for bang for the buck, you might want to consider Smyrna, just South of Marietta. It will keep you on that side of town and you'll be going against the flow of traffic during rush hour (North of 285 anyways).

If you do relocate there, wherever you end up, be sure to subscribe to a Duluth newspaper, because that's nearby... and is where all the craziness is... I'm sure you remember this cutiepie:

The city made national headlines twice in 2005. In March, Fulton County Courthouse shooting suspect Brian Nichols was captured in a Duluth apartment after holding local resident Ashley Smith hostage. In April, local resident Jennifer Wilbanks was reported missing a few days before her planned wedding to John Mason. She was found a few days later in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she admitted to having lied about being kidnapped.
