No more inspections stickers in NC

http://www.newsobserver.com/news/growth/traffic/story/1211915.html

Starting in October, drivers no longer will receive date-punched stickers to prove that a car has been inspected and to remind them when next year's checkup is due.

The inspection renewal will occur just before the registration expiration and the registration will not be renewed until the vehicle passes inspection.

I like an uncluttered windshield

OBD2 started in MY96, the '95s are still OBD1

good idea, in NYS they would never do away w/ the window stickers because it would make it harder for the police to generate revenue

mmmmm - need to figure out how to work this best to my advantage

78 911 that has not been driven much the past few years

last inspection 2006 - tag is currently expired (around may 07)

If I understand correctly if I renew my tag before october I then I could scrap the decal off and run it until at least may with no worries of getting pulled. then I would have to get it inspected to get the tag renewed.

it is just such a pain in the ass to get her inspected lately. Safety only - However they do a visual for emissions - it is a gray market car so they start looking for an egr that never existed and I usually get some grief over SSI's as well. Or they just refuse to inspect it period

Now the real question - What is this going to cost.

Safety Inspection has been $9.10
Emissions has been $30
Add $10 for tinted windows

Tag renewal has been $28 (non customized)

Bill,

You are correct, 96 and newer are required to have the emission's tested via OBD II plug in.

Osidak,

Never had a problem in NC with the SSI's on the Porshce or my old 75 VW bug that was supposed to a =n EGR and Catalytic Converter with Fuel Injection.

The inspector at the shop prefers to have me drive the car in and open the deck lid, doors etc.

He does not want to physically touch the car in fear of breaking something.

when i have gotten it inspected the past few years i run into three scenarios

*We are Porsche experts (most of the time they aren't) and they fail the car because they can not find an egr - or something along those lines. I point out it is a grey market car and show EPA/DOT papers and their eyes glaze over and fail the car. They still get their money so they don't care

*We don't know a thing about this car so we can't inspect it

*We just slap a sticker on your car after making you wait (so we can observe you) to make sure you are not DOT/EPA employee getting ready to bust us.

Obviously the last one is the best as far as I am concerned but they always seem to decline to inspect the car two years running.

Now the funniest things I have been failed for:
*The cabin heat blower was not connected to the duct work - Was failed on the basis that was an emissions item (intake pre-heat)
*Stuck throttle - the guy pulled the throttle hold up - when I tried to show him that he still refused (porsche expert by the way)
*Did not believe EPA paper work because my car had the leaded gas restrictor in place but did not have an EGR or Cat (car came with a premuffler - never had a cat)

Maybe I should just take a drive up to Raleigh see some cousins and then get it inspected. Got 5 more years of this if they don't end up changing the law
