Contemplating a move to Sacramento...

So the girlfriend and I have decided to move to the mainland and so far the #1 place on the list is Sacramento (due to various reasons, mainly opportunities for her to open her own practice). She's from Stockton so she's somewhat familiar with the area, but it's been a while since she's been there. Me, having grown up in Hawaii and never been to Sacramento (only drove through it 4 years ago) can anyone with some insight suggest where in Sac is a good place to live? Thanks in advance!

You like hot and muggy right? Did I mention that it's hot and muggy in the summer?

What kind of practice? I'll see if my girlfriend has some ideas tomorrow (Chiropractor who grew up and ran an office within 20 miles of there).

Mesopotamian God of Disease, "Bringer of Death on the West Wind", the precursor to Satan, the demon that possessed Regan MacNeil in "The Exorcist" and the gargoyle in a Futurama episode.

Also some kinda death metal band in Sweden.

Aren't you glad you asked?

I'm ok with not going to the beach...yes, I'm one of those who's surrounded by water, and yet I can't remember the last time I've been to the beach...

If I was to move to the Sac area, I'd consider places like Roseville, Rocklin, and for more $$$, Folsom or Granite Bay. Closer to Sacramento, Fair Oaks and Orangevale are nice, more developed areas. If you have to be in Sacramento proper, maybe North Highlands or near Cal Expo/Arden Mall (I'm sure there are many other OK areas). The summers do get hot (hotter than Hawaii on the thermometer), but it's usually very dry.

This is very much a generalization, but too far west of downtown or too far south of the greater Sac area, and I personally wouldn't consider living there.

Is San Francisco a possibility at all? If my wife and I were starting out, it's the first place we'd consider, again. Just my 2 cents. Nothing wrong with Sac, though. We've lived in both places as a young couple w/o kids. Good luck.

If your heart is set on Sac, look into the area near Mercy General Hospital on J Street. Lots of cool, older homes on tree lined streets. If you move closer to downtown, you'll be seeing more homeless like any big city. If you don't care about living in mid or downtown Sac, look into Roseville, Rocklin, Folsom, Granite Bay like others have suggested. Homes are realy cheap even in those high rent locations now. Lastly, El Dorado Hills is one of my favorites as it's not flat but traffic on HWY 50 sucks. Actually, traffic on I-80 sucks pretty bad now too. Sac has become like a little LA. Can get smoggy and plenty of fake boobs, Hummers, MBs and BMWs.

I used to live in Elk Grove but I still go to Sac at least weekly. Let me know if you want to know anything else. Oh yeah, Go Kings (but they suck now too)!

Hot. Very L.A.-like. Good railroad museum, though.

Take a look at Auburn to the East or further West toward the coast, imo.
