The single best song in the universe!!!

Change of Seasons - Dream Theater

If you have never heard this song, I suggest you sit down and take the 25 minutes necessary to enjoy it in its entirety.

Any other rediculously awesome mamajams out there?

sammyg2 09-12-2008 08:11 AM

it's a world of laughter, a world or tears
its a world of hopes, its a world of fear
theres so much that we share
that its time we're aware
its a small world after all

CHORUS:
its a small world after all
its a small world after all
its a small world after all
its a small, small world

There is just one moon and one golden sun
And a smile means friendship to everyone.
Though the mountains divide
And the oceans are wide
It's a small small world

(chorus)

IROC 09-12-2008 08:13 AM

I always come back to "Time" by Pink Floyd. The maturity and musicianship on Dark Side of the Moon was just unbelievable.

SlowToady 09-12-2008 08:13 AM

Search YouTube for "Eric Clapton Buddy Guy live." It's called like, Chicken Head Jam or something. It's awesome.

sammyg2 09-12-2008 08:17 AM

Seriously, I just listened to about 4 minutes of it and yawned.
I heard what looked like a bunch of very talented studio musicians jamming together, technically very sound, but where's the song? I heard improv but no song. Maybe I didn't listen long enough to get past the intro:rolleyes:

Thanks for that! It should leave my brain in about a week. :p

Heh, I'm sitting here listening to Octavarium when I opened this thread. Change of Seasons is ok, but they've matured a lot since then. Check out "Home" from Metropolis Part II: Scenes from a Memory. Concept album with a lot of hits and misses, but that track is a standout.

If you like art rock "epics", then I can recommend some of my favorites:
Yes, "Close to the Edge", "South Side of the Sky", "Gates of Delirium", and "Awaken".

also, Liquid Tension Experiment (a Dream Theater project/offshoot) is amazing.

King Crimson's "Epitaph" is really good too, not nearly as long though.

That's a good one.

Not my cup of tea, first time and hopefully last I hear it. It just seems to repetitive for my taste.

My favorite long rock song has to be Led Zep http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89yw7wqoaio&feature=related , but I have a soft spot for http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzjOzjoF8Yg .

You gotta listen to the whole thing, not just hear it. Ya the intro is long, the middle is long, and the end is long. Its a long song but there are some very good parts to it. I didnt think much of it either my first time hearing it.

Jim Richards 09-12-2008 09:23 AM

Pink Floyd...Offical Band of the Big Bang.

Oh Haha 09-12-2008 09:27 AM

Yes, Dream Theater is a group of "studio" musicians but they are extremely talented and very versed in music composition. Mike Portnoy is one he!! of a drummer.

I don't care for everything they've done but they do send chills up/down the ol' spine on most of their stuff.

Avenged Sevenfold is another newer group that is talented.

All bow to the incomparable Tommy Seebach Band creating music video magic.

Turn it up.

Not as 'deep' but Abbey Road contains so much goodness I can only imagine Floyd and Zep being comparable.

NICKG 09-12-2008 10:47 AM

I like "deep in the heart of jersey" by uncle floyd

For me it is, "Us and Them"...best anti-war song ever.

"Wish you were here" was my favorite.

But it is hard to compete with "Octopus garden".

kstar 09-12-2008 11:57 AM

Depends on how one defines a "song", but Radiohead's OK Computer, Kid A and In Raindows are my favorite "songs".

One really has to listen to any of these in one sitting.

Then, of course, there is all of that other "music". :D

Kayleigh, by Marillion off Misplaced Childhood album

The entire album is amazing. It is a concept album, but this song can stand alone.

If one were to find themselves in a relaxed, altered state of mind, this video is mesmerizing (from what I hear). In particular the chick in the bikini- but don't skip ahead you perverts...

Any of you guys into Porcupine Tree? Kinda like Crimson meets Floyd meets Sabbath and Tool - very eclectic heavy prog.
