help: Varmints, Need to KILL!

looks like i have have varmints....and lots of them, and I am P.O.'d. I live in the Suburbs in SE, Pennsylvania.

1 Possible Ground hog: OMG! see pic
2 Field mice and or Voles: confirmed
3 Rabbits: Confirmed

How do I attack and kill with extreme prejudice?

Here is what i think are Field mice or Voles..lots of critter trails leading into holes like this.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1221582124.jpg

Here is what I think is a rabbit warren...I saw babies last year come out of a hole this size.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1221582227.jpg

And saving the best for last, i haven't mowed the lawn in 3 weeks or more, went to the shed. I saw earlier this year my concrete pad crumbling , i thought it was Rain washing out the soil...till i found this pile of dirt.
Ground HOG????

This thing has moved 4" chunks of concrete.

I Guess living under the Shed isn't good enough anymore.

Yup, that last one is a woodchuck/ground hog, depending on where you live. We trap most of our pests but you might consider using baits/poisons depending on your situation. And keep a .22 handy in case you see it.

Whatever they are they sure don't tip well.;)

Heel n Toe 09-16-2008 09:41 AM

Just putting a few ones out there isn't gonna do it; they're pretty greedy.

If you're gonna try to bribe them into leaving and going next door, I'd suggest fives or tens... and a note explaining yourself.

ROFL!! If they keep crapping dollar bills, I'd breed them!

BTW... seriously, this stuff is your friend: http://www.hardwareandtools.com/icat/blockbarnugpoison/

You need the RODENATOR. Fire in the hole!

I would try a leg hold trap for the woodchuck and some big rat traps for the other holes. chain the traps in the ground to keep the varmint from dragging them into the holes to die. While shooting them is always good, the traps will be on duty 24/7.

gtc 09-16-2008 10:51 AM

Well, they're not going after the money or the hand tools, so they can't be jewish or quaker. Maybe they're catholic, in which case a glass of whiskey might do the trick?

Rot 911 09-16-2008 10:56 AM

That is the thinnest concrete pad I have ever seen!

Chlorine tablets in hole add water cover hole with rock. Good bye.

Or you can piss in the hole. Mark your territory, they HATE that. I do it with chipmunks around my foundation. They move out quick.

Also works with women...

"Honey, what are you doing pissing on the shed?"

"Just marking my territory dear."

RWebb 09-16-2008 01:28 PM

you can trap and or kill them but the real problem is that you have habitat that they like

that means new ones will move in soon!

if you can think of some way of eliminating what they like in your land that will fix it permanently.

what are they eating? do you have a vege. garden? big compost pile?

a pet weasel and badger will make them feel unwelcome with a vengeance.

scottmandue 09-16-2008 01:34 PM

Have you considered getting a dog?

That Rodenator is truly a "Hold my beer and watch this" kind of tool.

I was thinking the same thing, I wonder how many beers it took to come up with that idea? I like it.

Every neighbot has compost or vegetable garden...

I have Fruit Trees: fig, apple and Pear (Damn Hornets...but that is another thread...

How about Snakes???? What snakes can I toss in to the yard to kill the mice and Voles.

I'll bet a Black Mamba or King Cobra would make short work of those pests. Of course you would have to move out once they arrive but the pests would definitely be toast. ;)

Seriously, traps are your friend here. Call your local vector control for help with the larger fellow.

mudman 09-16-2008 06:03 PM

Snakes won't eat enough to keep the mice/voles away in your situation. Even my lazy cat is bringing me about an animal per day, no shortage of critters here.

Invest in a few live traps and some poison bait. I've caught 6 woodchucks in the last couple of months with one trap. Oh yeah, and over twenty raccoons and one skunk!

Rick Lee 09-16-2008 06:14 PM

Non-venomous snakes are just as effective at killing rodents as are venomous ones. No need for any snakes that aren't indigenous to the area. But they don't eat too much. Maybe once a week in a really target-rich environment and they can go a year without a meal. Traps or a .22 plinker are what you need. I'd be worried traps or poison if you have pets. When I was a kid our Great Dane got a trap on his foot and it was a real mess.

Hugh R 09-16-2008 06:42 PM

Don't kill varmint!! His posts really aren't that bad.

If you use a standard live trap it won't be a problem for pets. Bait it with apple, peanut butter, cabbage, broccoli, and you'll catch a varmint or a really dumb cat.

Use the poisons IN the rodent holes and you shouldn't have a problem with pets eating it. The stuff I would use is cracked corn covered in poison, labeled as mole /woodchuck poison.

What you need is a "havahart" trap. I have one- this is a trap where the end closes when your animal steps the wrong way. I use this on the iguanas at my house.

-Typical week in Florida? I take about two iguanas. Since rats are common in Florida, I also put out a smaller "havahart" trap with peanut butter to get these. I usually kill 10 iguanas and 3 or 4 rats each month between the two traps.

How do you kill animals in Havahart traps? I just submerge them in the canal behind my house. A rat can only hold its' breath for 45 seconds....then it stops moving. 15 seconds later, I pull the trap out of the canal and open the door, allowing the rodent to fall in the the water. Good.

Rats spread diseases-

The damn iguanas behind my house are another story. I catch these with banana in a LARGE havahart trap, and I kill them with my pellet gun. Crossman 760; a weak gun, but if you put .177 hollow-point pellets in it and pump it up 15 times, it will do the trick. I've killed iguanas with one pelet, but that's rare; Generally I kill the bastard after two or three hits-

In any case, I'm going after the varmits behind my house. Any suggestions? Iguanas are TOUGH! You need a .22 WMR in order to kill these things instantly. I cannot fire a real "firearm" in the subdivision....

N!

More like a vegetarian cat. WTF kind of cat goes for apple, peanut butter, cabbage or broccoli?
