Mossberg 12-gauges any good?

Local place has a sale going. I'm considering taking the plunge. They've got vintage Russkie M91/30s on sale dirt cheap too so I might pick up one of those just for fun too.

Mostly I'm looking for a good, simple, powerful "ready to rock" piece for home defense and maybe occasional trap shooting. I figure in a close quarters home invasion situation a shotgun is superior to virtually everything else including handguns (my Glock is my current home defense weapon of choice).

Any thoughts or opinions on 'em?

I've had a few Mossbergs - by far some of the best shotguns i've owned
BTW - if you are going to use a shotgun for home defense, DO NOT get one with a pistol grip, I know they look really cool, but they are easier to get strong armed away from you in a close quarters struggle.
also have some 00 buck shot to load into it - it makes a nice pattern in a perp

The Mossburgs are solid, dependable, plain jane no frills shotguns. They serve their purpose just fine, but are not going to win any beauty contests.

I keep an 18" 500 close by.

They work just fine. The plastic safety button tends to break under a lot of use, but Brownells sells a metal replacement for just a few bucks.

Don't fall into the movie/TV fantasy that just the sound of you racking the action to load a round will send the bad guy crying back to his mother. If a firearm is to be used for self defense, than it needs to be loaded and ready to go (round in the chamber and cocked).

I've had tweo cheap shotguns, the first was a mossberg and now I have a savage. Both were just fine, no problems.
My current 12 gauge is a savage goose gun with a pistol grip and an 18" barrel. I swear you gotta sneak up right next to those gooses with this thing

Mossbergs, in the hands of a novice, will shoot just as well as a 12K Italian show pony.

Have fun and then worry about fit later.

Russian shot guns are fine, too. I bought a .410 for my son years ago for under a $100 that still goes boom every time we pull the trigger.

Have fun, it is what shooting should be.

I've got a Mossberg pistol grip 20 gauge with alternating loads right by my nightstand.

Thanks guys. Mossberg it is. It comes with a spare 18" barrel too, which is nice. I'm heading over after work. Pics later.

Oh, and I DO have my guns chambered and ready to go at all times. Seconds count.

My old Mossberg before

And after with an 18" barrel and a cheap folding stock/forgrip combo.

I now have a cheap Surefire G2 flashlight mounted on it and it sits beside my bed.... Just popped a possum with it the other night that the dog was making a fuss over it in the side yard at 3:00 am.

I have NEVER had a problem with the gun.... pull the trigger and it goes bang.... rack it.... repeat

I'll second ALL that, and add that in my home gun the first shot is rubber buckshot as a safety measure. It will knock them down, and leave nasty bruises, but not kill them unless at very close range. You get an "Oops" round. All the rest of my loads after that are 00 buck.

Paul you should dump the PG and put a sawn off wooden stock on it. Makes a much better balanced weapon and can be used as a club if needed. Just my .02.

The Mossberg vs. Remington debate is the shotgun world's version of the Ford/Chevy debate.

I'm a Remington/Chevy man myself.

That said, they are pretty equal. Both have a ridiculous amount of aftermarket support. Both will go boom when you pull the trigger. Both are rock solid and will last longer than you will.

I have three barrels for my 870: a rifled slug barrel, a vent rib field barrel, and a cylinder-bore 18" barrel.

I wouldn't touch a Mossberg with a 10 foot pole. IMO they're like the opposite of Glock.

Benelli.

having shot ALOT of innocent defenseless birds since my youth with a plethora of different snotguns, i own a remington 870 w/every conceivable option and barrel. bird/duck/riot/home defense/etc configuration. all the chokes/tools/followers/ 3 sets of stocks/forearms etc. for sale. robar did the parkerizing/action. $500 bucks firm as hell.

with that aside after shooting some awesome browning autos in 12/16/20 over the years(real juans not built in the land of the rising sun), i ventured juan day over to the hk/benelli area.

well.................after all the goodies/all the riot gear soon to be banned as per the frenzy back then i bought me an hk/benelli 12 gauge with all options and configs.

the worlds FASTEST SNOTGUN BAR NONE! 5 rds in 3 seconds!

which being a legal hunter here in az. means only having 3 rds in gun(9 rd tube blocked) i always expend 3 rds per bird. meaning i dont usually miss.......its that fast and accurate. 18 1/2 vent rib barrel with pistol grip is a gas on dove/flying rats(pigeons) and quail. weighs nothing idiot proof easy to clean parts everywhere ie. midway brownells etc.

more fun than shooting ducks in a barrel! whoops i didnt say that .......honest!

I have a Mossberg 500 pump and have had constant trouble with ejection. I'm sure I just need to really look it over and polish some components but I haven't got around to it (hey it's only been 16 years).

Well I bought the Mossberg last night - its a "Security" model, not super expensive or fancy, but certainly good enough to make some holes in anyone who intends ill on me or my family. Seems like a pretty reasonably light and nicely balanced gun. I'll know more when I pick it up in a couple of weeks (yes, the 10-day wait applies to shotguns too apparently).

I figure I'll take it out to the range in a few weeks to ensure everything is working as it should be and then maybe an occasional trip out to blow up some flying clay UFOs. That's about it other than having it handy for any less-than-pleasant incidents around home. After having my garage burglarized a few weeks ago I want to make absolutely sure I'm ready in case the next scumbag who decides to target me isn't satisfied with stealing stuff from down there and decides to come upstairs. I abhor hunting and have no plans on shooting anything living with it other than potential home invaders/looters/thieves.

I also picked up an interesting old Russian M91/30 that they had dirt cheap. It's just a simple bolt action rifle (7.62) but should clean up nicely and make for an interesting conversation piece. I think maybe two or three more guns in my future and I should be all set (at some point I'd like to pick up a .45 1911 and would love an AR-15 if Kommiefornia would ever get rid of their stupid requirement for 10-round magazines - I can't see the logic of wasting the money on a nice piece of hardware like that to have it only shoot 10 rounds at a time). Maybe an H&K MP5 at some point too - a friend of mine years ago had one and it was an amazingly nice gun. Not sure about the legalities in CA though - I'd have to check. As with most "good stuff" it's probably illegal.

Oh well - some fun days at the range ahead! Pics in a couple weeks when I pick up the new toys...

Interesting...how much of the wooden stock do you take off?

PoP, enjoy. I have a bunch of shotguns (Model 12, Browning A5, 870, two .410, etc.) and my only advice is to find a place to shoot and then shoot!
