Sad but had to happen. You can't host 3 million fans every year without the place taking a beating. That doesn't include any of the special events, etc...

As a lifelong Yankee fan, I admit I'll miss the old stadium.

meh, They did the same thing here in GSO a few years back, shut down the oldest minor league park in the nation for a spiffy new one. It's just not the same, and haven't been to more than 3 games since.

+1.

As a kid, I remember spending my summer nights watching the Yanks play their opponents - on a small Black and White TV! Countless hours of Phil Rizutto and the other broadcasters - to me, Phil is the voice of the Yankess, and will always be! (RIP, Phil...)

Watching the greats play in that stadium -- my era of the Yanks included Thurman Munson (RIP), Ron Guidry, Goose Gossage, Greg Nettles, Lou Pinella, Reggie Jackson, Mickey Rivers, Bucky Dent, Chris Camblis, Fred Stanley...and the list goes on.

I went to about a dozen games at Yankee Stadium, including a very special game -- the day David Wells threw a perfect game about 5 years ago - 1 of only 3 perfect games played in that great stadium.

A friend of mine who used to live in the Bronx as a kid would remember taking the subway home, and hoping to catch a glimpse of the game going on.

Those are the memories I have of the Yankess and Yankee stadium - that building is more than just a ball park - it's the house that Ruth built...

Baseball has lost its soul. Now its just another big corporate circus.
I'd rather go to my local minor league park, spend an 1/8 of the price and have a better time.

quit watching baseball when they cancelled the Series due to greed and childishness, even change the channel if they start showing highlights

Given that, still distressing to see a landmark needlessly destroyed. Did they tear down Fenway yet?

Hate to see another 'old' stadium go especially one with such great history like Yankee Stadium. Would been nice if they just would have restored it. Hopefully some of the old touches will make it into the new park.
Being a Red Sox fan, may the day never come that Fenway gets replaced.

z-man, many of us within the Red Sox nation will always have fond memories, good and bad, of that great cathedral called Yankee Stadium. Especially winning game seven after being down 3-1.
What a treat it was to celebrate and share our championship victory with our Yankee friends in their own home. A day that I am sure many Yankee fans will soon not forget. Hopefully we will enjoying ourselves again in the "house that george built".
LOL

i am sure that the original post contained a lot of the main reasons. however, it is my understanding that the structure has outlived itself. mainly, they would have to completely renovate it at a greater cost than building new in order to make it safe/functional.

Yup. They already rebuilt it once and they kept parts of it to keep the history; for example the columns behind the bleachers.

It will be interesting if they are able to bring over some of the charm; or does it become just another modern park.....
