Took the twins for a glider adventure

A buddy invited us out to go up in his glider this weekend. The twins loved it. Not a lot of great thermals but fun for them nonetheless.

Buddy belongs to a local glider club...$500 onetime joining fee, $25/month dues; $10/hour to use the club's 3 gliders (2 hrs/month included in monthly dues); tows are $5 per 1000 ft....a bargain, really.

Oh buddy are you in trouble. You should send here to a nice little school in the heartland of OK. I will make sure she stays out of trouble. I think shes about my age ~17 right.

HAHA I win Dave. I have a real ID to prove my age. She could pass for at least 20 though.

Those prices would be high for my area. I went four years ago - member for a day, $50.00. It was awesome, I would love to do it this fall and see all the colors.

Recent local PCA auction for "Make a Wish" had it going for $100.00.

My father took lessons 20+ years ago. I can remember going out to watch. Once I was old enough... about 10 I think, the instructor took me up.

They didn't tow up with a plane. They had a truck at the end of the runway with a big winch powered by a VW engine. Once you got up in the air, you released the cable.

THe day I went up, there were a ton of "thermals" or whatever it was. We were up for 20-30 minutes and I was just in awe. What an amazing feeling, you could feel the air like you feel waves and current in the water. And the noise, or lack of it, was fantastic. Some of the same sensations you get from sailing, I suppose, but being up in the air was mesmerizing for me... it was the first time I had EVER been in a plane of any sort.

I'd love to get into that, but there are no local clubs

I have done that myself when I lived in FL. The closest thing to sex ever! I was hooked (no pun intended) SO much fun. As close to being a bird as I will ever get.

What kind of license do you need to pilot a glider?

I was the ground crew for a bud from work during sailplane races in the Mojave dessert. I just got drunk and passed out in the back of his trailer. Good thing he always made it back.
